Is A ‘Friends’ Reboot In The Works?
For millions of people, just one mention of the word friends will have them instantly humming “I’ll be there for you” under their breath. Though the NBC hit sitcom, Friends, has been off of the air for over 15 years, fans’ absolute obsession with the show remains as strong as ever. With such an incredibly invested fan base, talks of a reboot are pretty incessant. Though the cast has been divided on a clear answer in the past, Jennifer Aniston recently set the record straight.
Though Friends spanned a whopping 10 seasons, the loyalty of the show’s fans has never wavered. In fact, the series finale (which aired way back in May 2004) was watched by an astounding 52.5 viewers, making it the fifth watched television series finale of all time. It’s rare that a show keeps viewers invested right through to the end, but Friends managed to do just that.
But, loyalty has only increased in the fifteen years since the series finale. Just last year Netflix users were outraged when they discovered that Friends was leaving Netflix at the end of 2018. Friends fans came out in droves, sending Netflix thousands of messages threatening to cancel their membership if the streaming platform got rid of the sitcom. Some superfans stated that the only reason they even had the service was to stream all ten seasons of the popular show. Due to the massive outcry, Netflix paid an astronomical $100 million to Warner Media to keep the show on its platform for an additional year.
Still, despite the constant support of their fans, some of the cast members have expressed reluctance in filming a reboot. Most notably was Courtney Cox who, last year, expressed fear that a reboot wouldn’t be executed well “I don’t know that there’s a way to redo it…It’s not like the other shows that have done reboots are doing so well.” the actress said. And Cox isn’t the only one. The male leads have also expressed various degrees of hesitancy in the past.
But it seems that the cast members may have had a change in heart. On a recent episode of the Ellen DeGeneres show, Jennifer Aniston was asked if a reboot was a possibility. Though Aniston’s reply was a little cryptic, she did state that all cast members are finally open to the idea of a reboot. “Listen, I told you this. I would do it…The girls would do it, and the boys would do it, I’m sure. Listen, anything can happen.” the actress admitted.
So what exactly would entice the entire cast to comeback for an encore? Many fans think that monetary gains would be reason enough. In ninth and tenth seasons of the beloved show, each cast member was making an astonishing million dollars per episode. Of course, if there was a reboot, the cast would probably not be making those insane salaries right away, but certainly, they could work up to receiving those figures in the future.
However, the cast is still making a crazy amount of money from their first run. After the ninth and tenth season, the actors started receiving syndication income. Each actor receives 2% of all syndication income which comes out to about $20 million dollars per person each year. With these kinds of numbers, we doubt the money alone will compel the cast to do a reboot. However, it would be interesting for fans to see how the friends interact after 15 years have passed.
Only time will tell if a reboot comes to fruition. In the meantime, we suggest you get in all your bingeing in on Netflix before the end of the year.
