‘Friends’ Reunion Special: Everything To Know About The Project

Friends was one of the biggest shows of the 1990s, and it still has a huge following worldwide. Not only does the show appear on syndication on cable TV, but it also got a place on the Netflix library. This has given the series a second wind years after it’s been off the air.

Although the series has long been off the air, there are many fans who would love to see Friends make a comeback. There always seems to be a rumored reunion around the corner, and this could actually become a reality in the near future.

It has been announced that HBO Max is currently looking to make a Friends reunion happen. Here’s what we know about this exciting project.

Friends premiered in 1994, starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer as a group of young adults who go through their 20s and 30s together in New York City. The group of friends dealt with their careers, families, relationships, and friendships on air.

It became one of the most popular series of all the time and was one of the most-watched shows of the 2000s. Friends has also been aired numerous times in the United States and many countries around the world, earning Warner Bros $1 billion in revenue every year.

The cast members also continue to pull in around $20 million annually just from Friends alone.

What the cast members have said about a ‘Friends’ reunion

Friends was no doubt a special part of the cast members’ careers, but over the past several years, most of them have expressed little excitement about doing a reunion or a reboot.

For example, Kudrow, who plays Phoebe, once said: “That was about people in their 20’s, 30’s … the show isn’t about people in their 40’s and 50’s. And if we have the same problems, then that’s just sad.”

LeBlanc, who plays Joey, also agreed that “it just wouldn’t be the same.” Meanwhile, Perry, who plays Chandler, believed that the show “ended on such a high,” so it wasn’t a good idea to try and beat that. Even Cox, who plays Monica, once told fans to “let it go.”

Jennifer Aniston shared that they are ‘trying to work’ on something

Even though the cast members did not seem too hopeful in the past, they might actually be singing a different tune now.

On a visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Show last month, Aniston, who plays Rachel, revealed that a Friends reunion might not be so far-fetched after all. Although she did not outright say that a reunion is coming, she did say: “We would love for there to be something. But, we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying, we’re really trying. We’re working on something.”

It seems that Aniston is one cast member who would be excited to work on Friends again. After all, the first picture she posted on Instagram after joining the platform in October was one of her with the rest of the castmates.

Additionally, a source told People: “Friends was the most important and the most loved project ever for Jen. When it ended, she basically cried for days.”

Deals are reportedly being made between Warner Bros and the cast members

Earlier this month, insiders also revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros is very serious about making a Friends reunion happen. Especially since it would allow its upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, to compete with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros is currently having discussions with the original cast members, as well as creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman. However, nothing is for certain yet at the moment and fans should not get their hopes up.

“When and if deals are completed, the challenge then becomes sorting out everyone’s schedules,” The Hollywood Reporter said. “Of course, the talks could fizzle and the whole concept could fall apart.”
