‘Friends’ Star Lisa Kudrow Says Security Searched Her Car Every Time She Left the Studio
“I’ll be there for you,” said the Rembrandts’ theme song for Friends. The six cast members were there for each other throughout the 10 seasons of the hit comedy. However, studio security was not there for Lisa Kudrow. The Phoebe actor says Warner Bros. security stopped her every time she left the studio lot after working on Friends.
Kudrow was a guest on Rob Lowe’s Literally! Podcast on Jan. 14. When they discussed memories of Friends, Kudrow described her frequent run-ins with studio security.
Lisa Kudrow faced suspicion every time she finished ‘Friends’
Friends made billions of dollars for Warner Bros. and continues to drive their business. However, Kudrow remembers being treated like a common thief.
“When I would leave, sometimes they would search my car,” Kudrow told Lowe. “I would go back and ask the rest of the cast, ‘So, did they search your car too?’ And they’re like, ‘No. Why? Do they know I’m on the show?’ It was funny.”
Kudrow speculated on why she was the only Friends cast member who drew suspicion.
“I do not have the face of a criminal,” Kudrow said. “I don’t know, maybe they just thought I don’t know who this person is but I know she’s not an actress. She’s leaving the lot and we’re meant to search everyone’s car.”
Lisa Kudrow wasn’t famous enough for security
In the ’90s, everyone knew the cast of Friends. They were the most watched show on television. The security guards must’ve been watching ABC instead.
“Security still doesn’t fully trust me,” Kudrow said. “Maybe because I didn’t have a nice enough car. I was really conservative. Does that make sense? The most expensive car I ever had was a Mercedes sedan. Then I got, which I loved, a Lexus, those little SUVs.”
Still, when Kudrow kept coming back in and out of Warner Bros. for 10 years, they never got used to her.
“They didn’t remember me from one time to the next,” Kudrow said. “I was so forgettable to them that they just like all right, we better search her car.”
After 10 years, she did take something from ‘Friends’
It wasn’t until the Friends series finale in 2004 that Kudrow actually took something from the set.
“I don’t think I ever walked off with anything until the end and then I took things,” Kudrow said. “I took a couple of tops that Phoebe wore [and] I took all of the Phoebe rings.”
Matthew Perry also snagged Kudrow a meaningful gift from the Friends set.
“Matthew Perry, I think he got permission, as a gift gave me this cookie jar that said ‘time’ that was in Monica and Rachel’s apartment,” Kudrow said. “One time I needed to reference the time. We all forgot that I should wear a watch. I saw that cookie jar and went, ‘Oh, look at the time, I have to go.’ Matthew afterwards was like, ‘Did you just point to the cookie jar and say oh, look at the time?’ I’m such an idiot. I do stupid things and it’s really funny.”
