‘Frozen 2:’ Is Elsa a Disney Princess?

Some call her a queen, some call her a princess, others call her a superhero. Elsa is one of Disney’s most beloved characters, ultimately ruling Arendelle and overcoming the fear attached to her ice powers. Is Elsa a Disney Princess? Why are her and Anna often excluded from the princess lineup? Here’s what we know about this character and the upcoming animated film, Frozen 2.

Elsa is technically the Queen of Arendelle from Disney’s ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen 2’

This character doesn’t just have superpowers and a loving sister. Throughout Disney’s Frozen, viewers see Elsa become the Queen of Arendelle. Some suggest that this is the reason Elsa is not considered a Disney Princess. Rather, she’s the first protagonist who is a queen in their story.

There are twelve characters included in Disney’s official Princess Lineup. Those princesses are Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Moana. Still, some fans consider Elsa and Anna princesses because they rival the popularity of the other characters. That could, in fact, be one of the reasons Anna and Elsa are separate from the other Disney princesses.

Elsa and Anna are two of Disney’s most popular ‘princesses’

Once Disney’s Frozen premiered, it became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, and merchandise was no exception. According to Vanity Fair, there was even a shortage of Frozen merchandise at the time of the movie’s release.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Elsa even outsells Anna in terms of merchandise. One article from 2014 reads, “Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which currently carries some 700 Frozen-related items, expects the Snow Glow Elsa Doll, which talks, sings and lights up, to be among its biggest sellers this holiday season. Wal-Mart stocks about 10% more Elsa dolls than Anna ones.”

Frozen 2 is no exception to this popularity. Once the official trailer premiered earlier this year, it was viewed 116.4 million times in its first 24 hours. That made it history’s animated movie trailer with the most views in one day. Additionally, ShopDisney is already bracing for the premiere of Frozen 2, releasing exclusive merchandise ahead of the movie’s premiere.

In ‘Frozen 2,’ fans can see Anna and Elsa tackle more challenges together

What makes Anna and Elsa unique is that they have each other. These two sisters have been through a lot, but it’s love that connects them through it all. Now, fans well see what happens next in the duo’s story, with the sequel to Frozen, entitled Frozen 2.

This upcoming film stars characters like Olaf, Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Sven as they journey into the unknown. Not much has been revealed in the movie’s trailer. However, fans could see the dangers threatening Arendelle. Along the way, fans hope to learn more about Elsa’s ice powers and if there are more people will seasonal abilities.

Disney’s Frozen 2 premieres on Nov. 22, 2019. Fans can stream Frozen on Disney Plus at its launch date, Nov. 12, 2019.
