FX Is Bringing ‘Atlanta’ Back For Season 3 In 2019
Fans who have been following the quirky comedy-drama Atlanta since it’s premiere in 2016 were delighted when, in November 2018, FX confirmed that a third season would be coming in 2019. While red-hot star Donald Glover will continue to helm the series as director, executive producer, writer, and leading actor, not much is yet known about the third season. In the meantime, let’s break down what has made the series such a smash success and why there is so much buzz for season three.
The plotline of ‘Atlanta’
Donald Glover had already been working in the mediums of television, film, and music for many years when he pitched the idea of Atlanta to the FX network. According to an interview Glover did with Billboard, he first sold the idea to FX as more of a comedy in order to get the show green-lit. Once Glover had the go-ahead, he was able to turn a show that could have been rather forgettable into something that stands as an enduring work of art.
The show is set in Atlanta and follows the lives and fortunes of two cousins, Earn Marks, a dropout from Princeton University, and Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles. Earn is tasked with managing the career of Alfred, considered to be the next big rap sensation, and struggles with the demands of a professional career along with dealing with an on-again-off-again girlfriend, a young daughter, and a host of other relatives.
Atlanta has been an incredibly rare show in that both critics and audiences love it. The reviews for Atlanta have been almost universally excellent, with New York Times critics hailing it as “surreal, wonderful, and hilarious.” Donald Glover has also become a household name based on the success of the show – his talent as a writer and director, as well as the starring actor, on full display with every expertly-crafted episode. In the two years that the show has been on the air, Atlanta has received two Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
What does Glover say about the third season of ‘Atlanta’?
In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Glover teased what excitement the upcoming third season will hold. Glover compared the seasons of Atlanta to Kanye West albums and said that like West’s third album, Graduation, the third season of his hit show would be the most accessible to new audience members and likely the most enjoyable. Beyond that, much of what is known about the third season remains a mystery – the premiere date has not yet been set, although if it follows the pattern of previous seasons, it could be sometime in mid-2019.
The cast of the third season
The cast for the third season remains to be confirmed as well. Main cast members Glover, Brian Tyree Henry, Lakeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz, and Khris Davis are all likely to return. Odds are, Glover is saving some special surprises for the third season as far as special guests and celebrity cameos as well – so far, comedian Katt Williams, football star Michael Vick, and popular rap group Migos have made guest appearances on Atlanta.
Glover has been hard at work on various film projects in addition to preparing the new season of Atlanta. He played Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story and had a role in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. With a net worth of $12 million, a skyrocketing career (including his musical adventures under his stage name Childish Gambino), Donald Glover’s third season of Atlanta can only serve to heighten his popularity and give him even more commercial and critical success.
