Gabrielle Union Included A Nod to Her Husband Dwayne Wade In the ‘LA’s Finest’ Pilot
Gabrielle Union had an incredible career before she met her husband, NBA star Dwayne Wade. The couple has since merged their lives, but when they got together, Union (who was previously married to NFL player Chris Howard) already had a lot going on. At a recent event, she spoke about how they met, her new show L.A.’s Finest, and how this latest project has changed their marriage.
How did Union and Wade meet?
There’s a pretty funny story behind the couple’s first encounter. “The first time I ever met Dwayne was at an all-star game,” said Union in a recent Wired interview. She told him she was “a huge fan” — before realizing he wasn’t who she thought he was. “I was like, ‘Who are you? What’s your name?’”
It seems as though this was an incident that they were able to laugh off, as the two married in 2014. Responding to another question during the interview, Union couldn’t remember the song that she walked down the aisle to at her wedding, but said that it was performed by John Legend and was one of his songs.
She worked in a nod to Wade in L.A.’s Finest
This new project is more than an acting gig for Union. She is not only one of the stars of the police procedural, but she’s also an executive producer (as is Alba). This granted her a bit more leeway in terms of shaping her character — but one line of dialogue from the L.A.’s Finest pilot in particular comes to mind.
In the show, Union’s character gives a nod to her real-life husband. She says that she’s “a Heat fan” and that she “knows a guy” despite living in Los Angeles. She’s referring to the Miami Heat, the NBA team Wade has played for most of his career. This also makes sense because Syd is from Miami, having lived there in Bad Boys II.
How he supports her career
Because of her duties as star and EP, Union has had to adjust much of her life in order to work on L.A.’s Finest. Though they have a very mother and kid-friendly set, Wade has still had to contribute a bit more since the birth of their daughter, Kaavia James, in 2018. But this hasn’t been an issue for the couple in the slightest.
“He’s like ‘Look I’ve won three championships. I’ve accomplished everything — gold medal, this, that, and the other. It is time for me to put my wife first. She’s cheered me on, it’s time for me to cheer her on.’ He says that in every interview,” said Union at a recent event at The Wing in Los Angeles about it being “her turn” to focus on her career.
In fact, they’re taking extra steps to make things flow smoothly. Union adds that Wade is going to therapy to help the transition process. She also praises him for being someone who “can recognize that there’s enough space for all of us to be champions.” It sounds as though things couldn’t be better for this all-star couple.
