‘Game of Thrones’: 6 Characters Who Should Have Died a Long Time Ago

Over the course of six seasons, Game of Thrones has had no shortage of tremendously evil characters inflicting pain on the characters we love. A seemingly masochistic endeavor, to watch Game of Thrones is to watch a world where heroes fail just as often as they succeed — where the line between hero and villain is not black and white, but shades of grey. Still, there are some characters who are so unbelievably terrible that you can’t help but hope they receive a heavy dose of karma even while writers continue to thwart our vengeful desires. Here are six Game of Thrones characters in need of some serious karma in the upcoming season.

6. Cersei Lannister

The fact that Cersei is coming in at No. 6 on this list and not No. 1 is proof of just how much characters can evolve over the course of the series. After all, this is a character who is responsible for the follow things: the physical abuse of Tyrion when he was a baby and continued cruelty toward him; the arrest of Ned Stark who is eventually beheaded; the coddling of her son Joffrey, turning him into a monster; and various acts of conspiracy rooted in self-interest. A thoroughly despicable character, Cersei became a somewhat sympathetic character this past season when she was imprisoned by the High Sparrow and forced to walk naked through the streets to the Red Keep. But it’s not enough just yet to keep her from getting her much-needed comeuppance.

5. Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish

A master manipulator, Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish has had his hands in various schemes throughout Game of Thrones’ five seasons as the kind of character who is always one step ahead. His cunningness and intelligence are two reasons why he’s such a fascinating character to watch, but don’t forget that this is the person who betrayed Ned Stark and was directly responsible for his execution. We also have Baelish to thank for Sansa Stark’s marriage to Ramsay Bolton, which might be the worst thing he’s done yet. All in all, you could probably make an argument that Baelish is somehow responsible for nearly every single bad thing that is currently happening in Game of Thrones.

4. Walder Frey

Walder Frey, overseer of the “Red Wedding” in his personal banquet hall, is still due for a visit from the karma police after two seasons. Using Robb Stark’s broken oath to marry one of his daughters as an excuse for the bloodshed, it should be noted that Walder Frey had shown little care toward the oath he swore to Catelyn Stark’s father while breaking his protection of guest right on the night of the “Red Wedding.” He is also shown to be extremely lecherous with over 100 decedents and a penchant for marrying young women as young as 15 despite the fact that he is almost 90 years old.

3. Roose Bolton

Walder Frey might be the face of the “Red Wedding,” but Roose Bolton is the orchestrator. The betrayal simply wouldn’t have been possible without Roose Bolton siding with the Lannisters behind the scenes while fighting alongside Robb Stark in all of his decisive battles. Add in his smug reveal of his chain-link armor to Catelyn Stark at the “Red Wedding” just to rub it in her face, along with the fact that he took it upon himself to give Robb the final blow, and you have one of the most hated Game of Thrones characters around.

2. Alliser Thorne [Update: Dead!]

Alliser Thorne has been a thorn (sorry) in Jon Snow fans’ side for a while now. Undermining Jon’s actions at Castle Black at every turn, Alliser proved to be the ultimate backstabber when him and several mutineers (including Olly) lured him to a courtyard and stabbed him to death. Luckily for us, it appears Davos Seaworth is on his way back to Castle Black and will be none to pleased to hear about Jon demise when season six comes along. And as far as Jon’s death is concerned? The verdict is still out on that. [Update, 5/24/16: As fans now know, Alliser Thorne was hanged for his role in the murder of Jon Snow.]

1. Ramsay Bolton

This couldn’t have been a surprise. Rape, murder, torture, creepy eyes — Ramsay Bolton is in need of some serious karma. Even before the most recent season when Sansa Stark fell victim to his depravity through marriage, Ramsay managed to make us forget all about how much we hated Theon Grayjoy when he tortured, castrated, and eventually turned him into Reek. And don’t forget his love of hunting innocent people with his pack of bloodthirsty dogs. Don’t expect anyone to shed a tear if Ramsay bites the dust as this character might currently hold the mantle for most evil villain around on television.
