‘Game of Thrones’: Everything We Learned From the New Images
Spoilers ahead for Season 5 and Season 6 of Game of Thrones!
Besides two full-length trailers (including the latest seen above), HBO also recently released a slew of official photos from Game of Thrones Season 6, giving fans a new look at what they can look forward to this time around. While the stills unfortunately fail to definitively answer the question of Jon Snow’s fate, they are packed with plenty of hints at what’s to come — including which of the other seemingly doomed characters made it past Season 5 and will return this season. Here’s everything that we’ve learned from the new images.
1. Sansa and Theon
Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) were last seen jumping off one of Winterfell castle’s dangerously high walls in the Season 5 finale. Their fate was left unknown, but it looks like they survived the fall, as they are shown here (for the first time) looking very much alive.
Now, the two just have to figure out where to go, before Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) figures out that they’ve escaped the castle. Luckily, he’s been away from Winterfell and busy routing Stannis Baratheon’s army.
2. The Greyjoys
Theon’s not the only Greyjoy that pops up in the new images. Balon (Patrick Malahide), who hasn’t appeared much on the series lately other than a few cameos in Seasons 3 and 4, is alive and back on the scene, as seen here.
Theon’s sister and Balon’s daughter, Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan), also appears, making it clear that the inhabitants of the Iron Islands will be playing a much larger role in upcoming episodes. We also know that Theon is finally supposed to be be returning home, so fans should prepare for a very interesting Greyjoy family reunion.
3. Myrcella’s poisoning
Any lingering doubts over whether the tragically poisoned Myrcella Baratheon (Nell Tiger Free) is really gone or not are dashed, thanks to the above images. In the first still, Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is seen returning to King’s Landing with the corpse of the daughter he set out to save. The second image then shows her corpse at the Red Keep.
Jaime has to break the heartbreaking news to Cersei that the daughter he was sent to rescue, Myrcella, has died. The two are left to come to terms with her murder.
4. Arya Stark
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) remains altered after the events of Season 5. Shown in this image with gray eyes, it’s clear Arya is still blind from last season’s conclusion.
5. The return of Bran
After a year off the show, a grown-up looking Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) is back and standing upright in this Season 6 image. As previously announced, this will be a big season for Bran, who has now learned to develop the full extent of his psychic powers, under the tutelage of the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow, also pictured above). That can be seen in this image, in which Bran is presumably standing because he’s in one of his vision flashbacks of Winterfell.
6. Tyron and Varys
Back in Meeren, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Varys (Conleth Hill) reunite, with the idea that they’ll run the city together in the absence of Dany.
The last time we saw Daenarys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), she had fled the fighting pits of Meereen on the back of her largest dragon, Drogon — only to get dropped in a field where she was surrounded by a massive Dothraki horse. While she dropped a ring as a clue to be found later, it looks like like she’s currently being held captive and looking a little worse for the wear.
Now that she’s exacted revenge for Renly’s death by killing Stannis, Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) might be bound to return to her original mission, which was to protect Sansa. Clearly, that mission hasn’t gone too well so far.
9. Sam and Gilly
Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Gilly (Hannah Murray), who both look like they just want their journey to be over with in this image, are still en route to Old Town and will likely make a pit stop at his parents house on the way.
10. Castle Black
As previously stated, Snow is not shown in any of the newly released stills. But it might not be all bad news for him. As fans remember, Red Priestess Melisandre (Carice van Houten), seen above, arrived back at Castle Black at the end of last season, after Stannis’s loss and Snow’s death. Rumor has it that she’ll be the one to resurrect Snow, as the Lord of Light followers have previously demonstrated the power to bring people back from the dead. Davos (Liam Cunningham), also seen above, remains at Castle Black as well.
Game of Thrones will return to HBO for Season 6 on April 24.
