‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8: What Drogon Really Did With Daenerys Targaryen’s Body
Game of Thrones may have come to a close, but that hasn’t stopped us all from wondering a few things about the final season. The main question left up in the air is what happened to Daenerys Targaryen’s body when Drogon, her last remaining dragon, flew off with it. We finally have some answers. Read on to learn more.
Daenerys Targaryen takes the Iron Throne

Fans will remember that the hit HBO series ended in a shocking turn of events. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) finally claims the Iron Throne she has waited her whole life to retake. She decides to burn King’s Landing along with innocent civilians and she wasn’t planning to stop there. She would have continued to take over Westeros and all who opposed her in the world. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) murders her and left people at home literally shocked.
Drogon takes his mother away
Drogon, the last remaining dragon in possibly the world, arrives to find his mother dead and gone. Instead of killing Jon, Drogon melts the Iron Throne and then takes Daenerys’ body away towards Volantis. So, where did he actually take her? Or maybe the question is what did he do with her?
Clarke has said that Drogon may have decided to eat her, but now it seems we have some answers about what actually happened. The season 8 DVD and Blu-ray set reveal some new information that fans of the series will want to hear. The release includes a making of the season documentary on the finale called “Duty is the Death of Love.” It includes commentary from Clarke herself and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
Did Drogon eat Dany?
Apparently, there was speculation that Drogon would eat his mother and Clarke says that fans told her that dragons are known to eat their masters. However, Benioff says (via Entertainment Weekly) that, “Drogon’s not going to eat you. He’s not a cat. Did you see how gently he was nudging you?” So, at least there’s that. Drogon didn’t eat his mother, but why did he light up the Iron Throne the way he did?
Although we didn’t learn exactly where Drogon took Dany or why he melted her throne, Benioff did provide this little detail: “If [Dany is] not going to sit on it, no one’s going to sit on it.”
Why fans think Drogon did what he did
Fans have their own thoughts on why Drogon may have decided not to kill Jon Snow and melt the throne instead. “Tyrion said in S5 that some maesters believe dragons are more intelligent than humans,” a Reddit user wrote. “I think Drogon’s choice to destroy the Iron Throne proves that may be true. Drogon understood that what Jon did was necessary. He knew that power lust had completely consumed his mother, so instead of killing Jon, he decided to destroy the symbol of what truly took his mother from him.”
Game of Thrones may be over, but fans are still trying to wrap their heads around everything that went down. At least we now know that Drogon didn’t eat Daenerys Targaryen.
