‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8: Will Daenerys Targaryen Become Pregnant With Jon Snow’s Child?

One of the most controversial aspects of Game of Thrones has always been its openness to showing incest. While many would argue this is a part of reality inspired by ancient British royal lineage, we’ve never before seen a similar plot development in a fictional show. Even more disturbing in these incestuous relationships is the romance between Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

In the show, Daenerys is Jon’s paternal aunt. What makes it slightly more disturbing than the Lannister incest — Cersei and Jamie are twins who are also in a physical relationship — is the lack of transparency. Cersei and Jamie, who admittedly are closer in genetics, know the facts and engage in their incestuous relationship. In the case of Daenerys and Jon, they are unaware that Jon is the child of Daenerys’ older brother Rhaegar. As such, the two unknowingly engage in a relationship.

With the incest done and the family tree revealed — both Jon and Daenerys know their relationship now — the bigger question is what happens if they have a baby together?

Daenerys shouldn’t be able to have children

In theory, Daenerys cannot bear children. This goes back to the earlier days when she had a stillborn child from Khal Drogo. If you remember, this occurred because witch Mirri Maz Duur used blood magic to bring Drogo back to life by sacrificing the baby’s life for the other. After this point, it’s thought Daenerys would never have kids again based on this curse and what the witch tells her.

With Jon, though, things might change. He even said himself to Daenerys in a pivotal scene last season that Mirri Maz Duur maybe wasn’t a reliable source of information. Also, in the world of Game of Thrones, anything is possible.

If Daenerys does have a baby, what will be the reaction?

With only a month and a half left for Game of Thrones to wrap up, Daenerys being pregnant and giving birth would have to require a considerable time jump. Other theories suggest maybe she’s been pregnant for a while and doesn’t yet realize it.

If so, birth could be sooner than we think. Should such a thing happen, a Baby Targaryen would certainly be entering a perilous world. Not only are its parents fighting the Night King, but they could end up battling each other for the throne.

In Westeros, Daenerys’s child could be at great risk of being killed in the middle of a White Walker war or from those who despise Dany. We all know how many enemies the latter has, meaning they’d have to live in isolation somewhere or find a way to bring more protection to the family.

Plus, let’s not forget this is risky inbreeding, which is dangerous in Westeros as much as in reality. It could mean Baby Targaryen growing up to be a bit unstable like some of his Targaryen ancestors. The only way to find out for sure is if Game of Thrones sprang forward to the future at the end to see if Westeros is truly being ruled by benevolence.

Daenerys might die as a sacrifice to have an heir to the throne

All the theories about Daenerys dying before we even see the last episode have favorable odds. Perhaps if she does die, it’ll be a sacrificial type of death so she can assure a Targaryen heir will outlive her.

What we hope doesn’t happen is if she becomes the Night Queen as some theories contend. Having a child in tow would mean the Targaryen heir would perhaps gain the ice throne someday, making Westeros ruled by darkness indefinitely.

Maybe this is the path the show is going in since it’s already given us so much darkness, usually with a purpose. George R.R. Martin does have good reasoning for all the deaths and destruction, but it’s possible he’s a softie for a happier ending. Then again, it might be somewhere in-between happy and dark as a way to provide something for everybody.
