‘Game of Thrones’ Star Natalie Dormer Breaks Up With Long-Time Fiance
Actress Natalie Dormer has forged an extensive resume in film and television. The actress rose to prominence by portraying strong characters in shows like Game of Thrones and The Tudors.
Dormer portrayed Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones, leaving the show when her character died a fiery death in Season 6. Shortly after Dormer left the show, the cast renegotiated their contracts to receive a pay raise for subsequent seasons.
Dormer also portrayed Anne Boleyn for the first two seasons of The Tudors, where she met her longtime fiance. Dormer met director Anthony Byrne on set in 2007. The two dated for four years, then became engaged when Byrne proposed while the two were on vacation in India in 2011.
Natalie Dormer and Anthony Byrne call it quits after 11 years
Dormer and Byrne have ended their engagement after 11 years together. According to New Statesman magazine, Dormer and Byrne have “parted ways since promoting the film [In Darkness] this summer.”
The news comes after the pair finished promoting their film In Darkness together. Byrne and Dormer co-wrote and co-produced the noir crime caper. Byrne also directed the film while Dormer starred in it.
Were there signs of trouble for Dormer and Byrne?
Although a reason for the breakup has not been given, both Dormer and Byrne have hinted that the writing of In Darkness may have been a source of contention for the pair.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Byrne hinted at troubles during the writing of In Darkness together. “Because we didn’t have an office or anything, we were in our own home writing, and then it would all kick off because we would disagree about something fundamentally or I would be a pain in the arse and I would challenge Nat, or myself,” Byrne said.
People magazine reported that Dormer previously told them, “I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a writing room but I wouldn’t recommend it with your other half.”
Does Natalie Dormer know how Games of Thrones will end?
Although she has not appeared in an episode since season 6, Dormer does know how Game of Thrones will end. Dormer revealed in an interview with The Sun that the information was leaked to her by a cast member.
“I was told the ending by someone on the show and even though I know how it does, I am just dying to see how they get there,” she said. “I’ll still be watching it like a regular viewer, completely agog, because I have no idea how the showrunners will get there. To be honest, I kind of wish I didn’t know,” Dormer told The Sun.
Game of Thrones will end after its eighth season. Production on the final season wrapped up in September of 2018. The show’s finale will air in 2019.
What’s next for the former ‘Game of Thrones’ actress?
Dormer is no stranger to traditional monarchs, as her roles in The Tudors and Game of Thrones have demonstrated. Dormer will take on a different type of royalty in her next project; she is set to portray acting royalty Vivien Leigh in a new television series.
Deadline reports that each episode will focus on a different role Leigh portrayed in her career. For example, one episode may focus on Dormer’s Leigh as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, while another episode may find Dormer portraying Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind.
Dormer also signed a first-look deal with Fremantle recently. The deal will allow Dormer to develop scripted projects for the production company. Dormer starred in Picnic at Hanging Rock, which was produced by Fremantle, earlier this year.
