‘Game of Thrones’: The Craziest Fan Experiences the Cast Will Never Forget

One of the most popular TV shows of all time will soon be coming to an end, but the stories and characters it created will live on forever. Game of Thrones has claimed a very special place in the hearts and minds of its viewers, and members of the cast share a unique connection with those fans who have followed the show since day one.

With the final season currently airing Sunday nights on HBO, those involved with the show have been reminiscing about the phenomenon that is Game of Thrones, and some of the outrageous encounters spawned by the series.

Prior to the premiere of Game of Thrones in 2011, the fantasy genre wasn’t very well represented in popular culture. Most people thought that shows involving dragons, giants, and primitive magic was the stuff of Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia and that only so-called “nerds” tuned in to fantasy programming. Game of Thrones is widely credited for the resurgence of the fantasy genre worldwide, uniting viewers of all interests and age ranges. Critics loved the show too, and though sometimes criticized for the abundance of nudity, the series has been both a critical and commercial hit.

Watching Game of Thrones on Sunday nights became a ritual in many households across the U.S., and more than almost any other show on television spawned an insane number of fan theories about various characters and storylines. Oftentimes throughout the course of the show’s eight-year run, fans have been able to accurately predict what happens on the show by closely following the smallest story details that would be lost on the average viewer.

Outrageous ‘Game of Thrones’ fan encounters

Clearly, with such passionate, dedicated fans, encounters with stars of the series are anything but low-key. Recently, members of the Game of Thrones cast sat down with Variety to discuss some of the most memorable meetings they’ve had with followers of the show.

As it turns out, some of the male stars get called upon rather frequently to help facilitate marriage proposals. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays the rather villainous Jaime Lannister, was once asked to propose to a man’s girlfriend on his behalf. Coster-Waldau was a good sport about it and agreed. John Bradley, who plays Samwell Tarley, an unexpectedly heroic character who has been around for nearly the entire run of the series, also admitted that his character arc on the show has inspired fans to ask their crushes out on dates.

Maisie Williams, who plays the beloved but deadly assassin Arya Stark, has even been known to hang out with fans that she’s never previously met, as with the case of one Game of Thrones fan who traveled from California to England to watch Williams in a play. Williams and the young fan ended up going to see a movie after her work in the play, which surely gave both Williams and the fan an experience to cherish and remember for years to come.

How will the ‘Game of Thrones’ phenomenon continue?

With Game of Thrones set to air the final episode in May, it’s certain that fans will experience mixed emotions when there are no more new episodes to look forward to. Fortunately, the actors who have become household names after the success of Game of Thrones aren’t going anywhere, and viewers will likely be able to meet many of them in person at various comic book conventions and festivals over the next few years. Some lucky fans might even be able to create their own unforgettable moments with their Game of Thrones favorite.

You can watch Game of Thrones Sunday nights on HBO — the eighth and final season is currently airing.
