‘Game of Thrones’: The 1 Couple That Fans Want to See Together Most (Hint: It’s Not Jon and Daenerys)

Relationships are like a wooden boat; difficult to build and to maintain | HBO

Game of Thrones fans love their ‘ships — and we’re not just talking about the boats that carry characters from one end of the realm to the other. The romantic pairings on GoT — both those that actually happen and those that fans want to happen — are often among the most discussed and dissected elements in the Game of Thrones fandom.

Some of these romances have already met a tragic end (Jon and Ygritte), and others that are popular with fans (Tyrion and Daenerys) are, sadly, pretty unlikely to transpire. Here are some of the show’s potential romantic couples, leading up to the one that fans are really dying to see together (Our No. 1 couple dates back to season 2). At least one of these pairings will likely come to pass, even if you may not have expected it.

7. Jon and Daenerys

He’s ice, and she’s fire. But even though they’re, in many ways, opposites, it’s hard to deny that there’s something pretty significant going on between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen.

Game of Thrones’ fans have long wondered if the King in the North and the Mother of Dragons would eventually pair up to take on Cersei together. And now that they’ve finally met, butted heads, and gained a mutual respect for one another, it’s clear that they’re going to be a team in some capacity.

Jon and Dany do have a lot in common. They’re both natural leaders with a desire to bring peace to Westeros. There’s also no shortage of support for the pairing within the GoT creative team. George R. R. Martin, author of the book series that serves as source material, has hinted that the whole point of the story is for Jon and Daenerys to get together.

And Game of Thrones’ showrunners recently confirmed that the pair dubbed “Jonerys” by fans will get romantic in the near future. The question remains whether or not their bond will translate into everlasting love — or if they’ll be wary about sustaining a love affair when they realize that she is pretty much his aunt.

6. Brienne and Tormund

For Tormund Gianstbane, it was love at first sight when he met Brienne of Tarth. The same definitely isn’t true for the latter, who has spent most of her time barely tolerating Tormund’s presence.

Though they’ve only had a few scenes together, Tormund’s made no attempts to keep his affections for Brienne a secret. Whether making eyes at her or frequently asking about her even when she’s not around, it’s clear that he wants to make an honest woman out of the warrior. For her part, Brienne seemed to be warming a bit to Tormund when we last saw them together in Winterfell.

The interactions between these two have been a source of humor and levity on an otherwise heavy show. And that’s part of the reason Game of Thrones fans have taken a liking to the pairing. It’s also a classic case of opposites attracting — at least, in the wildling’s case. And most GoT fans can agree that if anyone deserves some semblance of a happily ever after, it’s our beloved, beleaguered Brienne.

Still, despite the drawn-out flirtation we’ve witnessed, there aren’t any concrete signs that Tormund and Brienne will end up together. They’re both warriors devoted to their causes first and foremost. And there’s no guarantee that either will even make it to the end of the series intact.

5. Daenerys and Jorah

Fans are divided on exactly how romantic the relationship between Daenerys and her advisor, Ser Jorah Mormont, should get. Some see him strictly as a father figure and mentor to the Mother of Dragons. Others think their long-standing connection, which was established way back in the very first episode, means they’re fated to be together.

There’s no denying that Daenerys and Jorah love each other deeply. After all, he endured the torturous process of having dragonscale removed just so he could get a chance to see her again. But given how she seems to be gravitating toward Jon, it seems that any romantic feelings on Jorah’s part will likely remain unrequited.

4. Jon and Sansa

Sansa Stark has endured two arranged marriages, one of which left her at the mercy of the sociopathic Ramsay Bolton. So she definitely deserves a chance at a happy, functional relationship before Game of Thrones wraps up.

Some fans believe that her best chance at romantic bliss lies with none other than Jon. In their eyes, Jon and Sansa are about as close as Winterfell could get to the new Ned and Catelyn Stark. They have a mutual respect and obviously care deeply about each other. But most importantly, they trust each other.

Yes, Jon and Sansa grew up as brother and sister. But given the series’ recent revelations about the King in the North’s true heritage, we now know they’re actually cousins, rather than siblings. And we all know there have been far more incestuous relationships on GoT.

Still, despite all this, it’s pretty unlikely we’ll see a Sansa and Jon romance. Actors Sophie Turner and Kit Harington have both more or less shot down rumors of that potential storyline.

3. Bran and Meera

Nothing brings two young people together quite like a treacherous, deadly journey through wintry terrain. At least, that’s what fans who want Bran Stark and Meera Reed to get together will have you believe.

The two have formed an unmistakable bond over the past few seasons. And there’s no question they have each others’ backs; Meera literally dragged Bran across untold miles to keep him safe. And Bran, too, did what he could — even paralyzed — to rescue her from Karl Tanner when they were captured in Season 4. But these days, Bran and Meera are more preoccupied with the impending war than they are with starting a romantic relationship.

2. Brienne and Jaime

Ever since Brienne of Tarth was tasked with taking Jaime Lannister back to King’s Landing in Season 3, their relationship has proven to be one of the most intriguing in Game of Thrones history. That’s because it’s hard to name. What started as animosity and disdain grew into respect, protectiveness, and even affection. And after Jaime confessed how he became the Kingslayer to Brienne while they were lounging in a bath together, their bond became intensely intimate — something critics have noted is, at this point, beyond just romantic.

Their obviously close bond has caused both fans and even characters within the Game of Thrones universe to question whether or not they’re attracted to one another. Actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has theorized that Brienne and Jaime are in love, but will likely never act on it.

He told IGN, “They would never recognize the thing that there is between them because it’s just beyond imagination — or at least they would never allow themselves to go to that place.”

1. Gendry and Arya

When Gendry and Arya Stark first met in Season 2 of Game of Thrones, they bonded instantly. They helped each other survive and grew to rely on one another for friendship and safety. Fans have held out hope ever since that the two would eventually kindle some kind of romance.

Sure, at first glance they may seem like an unlikely pairing. Joe Dempsie, who plays Gendry, is nearly a decade older than Maisie Williams. But there’s less of an age difference between the characters themselves. And Arya, perhaps more than any other character on the series, seems intensely disinterested in falling in love or settling down.

But there are hints in George R. R. Martin’s book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, that Gendry and Arya are attracted to one another. That definitely came through in their early interactions in HBO’s adaptation. Gendry and Arya both showed some affection toward one another when they were getting ready to say goodbye. When Arya said they could, perhaps, be each other’s family, he responded that she would be his “lady.”

Fans have long wondered if that scene was meant to be foreshadowing or simply a sweet throwaway moment between two kindred spirits. But both Williams and, more recently, Dempsie, have hinted that the discussions about their characters’ romantic feelings could amount to something more than speculation.

Dempsie said he had no idea whether the two would end up together. But he did concede that it’s an idea he could get behind. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “It would just be nice if they met again, wouldn’t it? It’s a pairing you wouldn’t want to mess with.”
