‘Game of Thrones’: What We Already Know About Jaime and Brienne in Season 8
Game of Thrones fans still have an excruciatingly long time to wait until Season 8, as the show won’t return until sometime in 2019. But filming has been underway for months now, and during that time, some intriguing bits of information have emerged.
Some of this concerns two of the show’s most popular characters, Jaime and Brienne, with one particular leak coming as great news to fans who ship them (page 5). Here’s a look at what we’ve learned about Jaime and Brienne’s roles in Season 8, in addition to some speculation about their fates.
1. Jaime will have a full beard
The last time we saw Jaime Lannister, he had a bit of stubble but not a full beard. However, that’s evidently going to change for Season 8.
“Generally speaking, I’m not crazy-hairy, but I have a full beard,” actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau told Short List in an interview conducted while filming was underway.
The last time we saw Jaime with a full beard, it was in Season 3, when he was being held captive by the Boltons. Evidently, he’ll be returning to that look for the final season.
Next: It’s a bit nerve-racking that Jaime is heading to this location.
2. Jaime is riding north, where a battle will reportedly take place
In the Season 7 finale, Jaime insisted that the Lannisters should ride north and help fight the army of the dead. Cersei actually promised Jon that she would do so, only to reveal to Jaime that she was lying. So Jaime, having grown frustrated with Cersei, decided to ride north himself.
Based on set photos that have leaked, it seems that sometime early on in Season 8, a massive battle will take place at Winterfell. In fact, a video from the set shows Winterfell on fire. This was part of a massive battle sequence with hundreds of extras.
So it seems that Jaime will likely get in on the fighting as the army of the dead reaches Winterfell sometime in the first half of this season.

3. Brienne feels rejected by Jaime going into Season 8
In terms of their relationship, where are Jaime and Brienne at the start of Season 8? In the Season 7 finale, they reunited, but their confrontation was tense. Brienne argued that the fight against the army of the dead goes beyond houses and oaths. She urged Jaime to talk to Cersei, but he simply responded, “And tell her what?”
Jaime clearly did take what Brienne said to heart, and he later ended up making a similar argument to Cersei. But Brienne doesn’t know that. To her, it seems like Jaime blew her off, and so their relationship is in a rough place going into Season 8.
“Brienne is…not heartbroken, but incredibly shocked and hurt, and that hurt makes her question the relationship and what it really means to her,” Gwendoline Christie told The New York Times. Christie added that Jaime and Brienne “have had this complex relationship which really can’t be defined, so it’s a really fascinating setup to move forward, for where we will go in the final season.”
Next: This will be great news to those who want to see Brienne and Jaime have more scenes together.
4. They seem to have a good amount of scenes together in Season 8
If you were hoping to see more scenes of Brienne and Jaime together in Season 8, you’re in luck, as it seems that they share a lot more screentime than they did last year.
Filming for Season 8 began back in October, and since then, there have been consistent sightings of the actors filming in various locations, especially Belfast. What’s interesting is the fact that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gwendoline Christie’s schedules seem to match up pretty closely; they’re often spotted in the same locations while filming is ongoing.
This suggests that Jaime and Brienne probably share a decent amount of scenes together in Season 8, and they won’t be separated as they have in the past.
Next: Jaime and Brienne are reportedly going to do this together in Season 8.
5. The two will reportedly fight side by side
Not only will Jaime and Brienne have scenes together, but they will also apparently be fighting in the same battle. A report from Winter is Coming indicates that Jaime and Brienne will both fight against the army of the dead in the fourth episode of Season 8.
It’s not entirely clear where this battle takes place, although it seems like it’s at Winterfell.
Next: Why Jaime and Brienne fighting together will serve a symbolic purpose.
6. They each have one half of House Stark’s sword
Not only will Jaime and Brienne coming together be satisfying to watch, but it will also serve an important symbolic purpose. You’ll recall that back in Season 4, Tywin Lannister melted down Ice, the Valyrian steel sword that belonged to Ned Stark. He used it to create two swords: Oathkeeper and Widow’s Wail.
Now, it just so happens that Brienne has Oathkeeper and Jaime has Widow’s Wail. So if they combine their weapons to take on the army of the dead in Season 8, it will be as if Ned Stark himself is battling from beyond the grave.
Next: Brienne is going to be reunited with this character, who some fans actually ship her with.
7. Brienne will likely see Tormund again
One of the most unexpected and hilarious parts of Season 7 was Tormund repeatedly creeping Brienne out. By the end of Season 7, it wasn’t entirely clear whether Tormund was still alive; he was on the Wall when it collapsed.
However, we now know that Tormund will return, as Kristofer Hivju has been spotted filming Season 8. In addition, it appears that Tormund and Brienne will once again spend time together, much to Brienne’s chagrin.
Early in 2018, Christie and Hivju were both spotted in Iceland, seemingly getting ready to go film at the same location. Interestingly, it appears that they were about to film with the actors who play Jorah, Sam, Podrick Payne, and Gendry.

8. Fans theorize that Jaime will die in Brienne’s arms
One theory suggests that the relationship between Jaime and Brienne is going to be crucial in Season 8, and it will play a key role in Jaime’s death. Back in Season 5, Bronn asked Jaime how he wants to die; Jaime replied, “In the arms of the woman I love.”
Both the show and the book love moments of foreshadowing like this, so many fans have speculated that Jaime’s wish will come true. At the same time, there’s also the prophecy that Cersei will be killed by her little brother; Jaime is technically younger than Cersei.
This has led fans to the theory that in Season 8, Jaime will kill Cersei, only to die in Brienne’s arms. It would be a fitting end for Jaime, who will once again kill the leader of Westeros in order to save everyone, only this time, he gets the ending he wanted.
