‘Game of Thrones’: Why Gwendoline Christie Says Playing Brienne Changed Her Life
Gwendoline Christie recently interviewed with The Guardian, where she expressed that playing Brienne of Tarth in Game Of Thrones changed her life. She felt a connection with the character, who is also used to being on the outside of social norms.
Brienne of Tarth is a female bodyguard in a man’s world and often takes flack because of it. Christie, a 6-foot 3-inch actress and model, is often herself on the outside of what society considers the norm. In her mid-30’s, she doesn’t fit the stereotypical mold of what most actresses and models look like — and we love her for breaking out of the box.
Gwendoline Christie is used to being on the outside
Christie says she’s used to being on the outside and doesn’t let it get to her. “I was incredibly lucky,” she told The Guardian, “that there was something inside me that just decided, ‘Fine. If I’m outside the party, then I’m going to have a party of my own.’ Because what else was I going to do? If you’re shut on the outside then you might as well enjoy yourself on the outside. Make the best of it.”
Gwendoline Christie’s early career
Christie is most known for playing Brienne of Tarth, but she has also played Captain Phasma in several Star Wars movies, Lady Jane in The Darkest Minds, and Commander Lyme in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, among others. According to IMDb, Christie started her career acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company, in their production of Great Expectations.
Is Gwendoline Christie single?
Christie is also a fashion model and regularly appears in dresses made by her partner, fashion designer Giles Deacon. Christie and Deacon, the designer of Pipa Middleton’s gorgeous lace wedding gown, have been together for about five years. Deacon told MSN that he loves dressing Christie for red carpet events because she’s so confident and knowledgeable. They met through a mutual friend and Deacon said he was instantly smitten with Christie. “For a million different reasons, I thought she was extraordinary,” he said.
Gwendoline Christie’sgrand success
Christie was recently named Performer of the Week by TVLine for her performance during Brienne of Tarth’s big knighting scene. It was an emotional moment for the character, receiving a long overdue recognition by Jaime Lannister. Fans of the show were ecstatic to see one of the truly good characters finally get the recognition she deserved. Brienne is a character who has been mocked her entire life. She stated that she’d never wanted admittance into the traditionally male order (of knights), but when it became known that Jaime was serious with his proposal, Brienne’s eye’s filled with tears.
Is Gwendoline Christie similar to Brienne of Tarth
Brienne’s knighting scene mirrors the long overdue acceptance, Christie has finally received in her acting career. The outcast, that doesn’t fit the perception of what an actress should be, is finally accepted in with the big name stars, and finally getting the recognition she deserves. It’s no wonder Christie identifies with the Character of Brienne so much. Christie told The Guardian: “I didn’t fit that type, y’know? Actresses seemed to me to be classically beautiful. At that time they seemed to be incredibly thin. It was just an aesthetic that I didn’t fit.”
With all this in mind, it’s no surprise that Christie described her role as Brienne as emotional and life-changing. The two have very similar struggles, although separated into very different worlds. It almost seems that Christie was born to play Brienne. Now that Game of Thrones is coming to an end, we hope Christie will continue to enjoy the success and fame she’s found from the show. She definitely deserves it.
