‘Game of Thrones’: Will Targaryens Be in ‘The Long Night’ Prequel Show?
The Long Night prequel series is based on A Song of Ice and Fire. It will show the world of Game of Thrones 5,000 years before the events of the original series. At that time, the world is about to descend into The Long Night where White Walkers come to be and the First Men and the Children of the Forest have a pact. Fans are probably wondering if the Targaryens will also appear. Here is everything you need to know.
George R.R. Martin said Targaryens won’t be in The Long Night prequel
Fans of the Targaryen family will be disappointed because the show will take place long before the family starts. “Westeros is a very different place,” explained George R.R. Martin to Entertainment Weekly. “There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully, that will be part of the fun of the series.” So there won’t just be Targaryens lacking from the story.
Targaryens weren’t always going to be tied to dragons
The Game of Thrones author also revealed he played with different ideas coming up with the House of Targaryen so they weren’t always going to have dragons. “I did consider in the very early stages not having the dragons in there,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
He then continued to say he had to be convinced to change it. “I wanted the Targaryen’s symbol to be the dragons, but I did play with the notion that maybe it was like a psionic power, that it was pyrokinesis — that they could conjure up flames with their minds. I went back and forth. My friend and fellow fantasy writer Phyllis Eisenstein actually was the one who convinced me to put the dragons in, and I dedicated the third book to her.”
The series already has its star
The cast is slowly coming together for the series. Naomi Watts is starring as a character described as “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.” Josh Whitehouse has also been cast, but there has yet to be any details about his character.
Although there are more details coming out about the show, it will still take some time for fans to see it. A previous report claimed a prequel series won’t come out until 2020. The title hasn’t really been cemented. George R.R. Martin first referred to it as The Long Night. But then he later clarified on his blog that HBO has yet to name it. Either way, it will certainly be a different show given there won’t be any familiar families or dragons for some time. But it will answer how those things came to be.
