‘Game of Thrones’:Why Maisie Williams Thought Arya Stark’s Sex Scene Was Weird

We’re all still thinking about that sex scene between Arya Stark and Gendry on Game of Thrones. Why? Because it was almost completely out of the blue. Before the scene, Stark was more focused on killing her enemies and reuniting her family than anything else. She had never so much as even looked at a guy romantically before.

Apparently, the hook up wasn’t just a surprise to audiences. Maisie Williams, who plays Stark, was also shocked.

How did Williams find out about the scene?

Sophie Turner, who plays Stark’s sister Sansa, actually found out about the scene first. She called Williams as soon as she read the script.

“I called Maisie and was like: ‘Have you read it yet?'” Turner told Entertainment Weekly. “And she’s like, ‘I’m midway through episode one.’ And I’m like: This scene, this page, read it! This is awesome! She was very happy.”

What were Williams’ initial thoughts?

This was something different than Williams had ever done as Stark before. It was completely new territory.

In fact, it was so out of character for Stark that Williams thought the scene in the script was a joke. Especially since showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had played similar jokes on other actors on the show.

“At first, I thought it was a prank,” Williams told the outlet. “I was like, ‘Yo, good one.’ And [the showrunners were] like, ‘No, we haven’t done that this year.’ Oh f*ck! I got to the read-through and I’m reading the scene and thought, ‘Oh, we’re actually going to do this. When do I shoot this? I need to go to the gym.’ A whole list of things.”

How was it to film the scene?

After all the build up to the scene, Williams says that filming it was actually a little weird.

“In the beginning, everyone was really respectful,” she continued. “No one wants to make you feel uncomfortable which kind of makes you feel more uncomfortable, because no one wants to look at anything that they shouldn’t look at, which in turn makes you feel like you look awful because everyone is kind of like,” she said, looking away. “You want people to act more normal.

But when they finally got to that fateful moment, it went by pretty fast.

“Then [the scene] was rushed,” she continued. “We were [directed by] David Nutter, who has a habit of speaking fast anyway. By the end we’re rushing to finish the scene and David is going, ‘Okay, you’re going to come in and do this and do that and, great, take your top off’—and then walked off. And I’m like…’Okay. Let’s do it.'”

What will happen next between Gendry and Stark?

The moments after Gendry and Stark’s infamous scene made it hard to tell what’s next for the new lovers. Stark didn’t exactly look happy once the deed was done. On the one hand, the White Walkers are on their way to destroy Winterfell, so it may not even matter either way.
