A new Instagram post from Emilia Clarke could indicate that Daenerys Targaryen’s iconic hair will be cut short in Season 8 of Game of Thrones.
On Tuesday, Clarke posted a photo on Instagram showing that she has bleached her hair in preparation for Game of Thrones filming. Clarke is naturally a brunette, and for the first seven seasons of the HBO series, she has always worn a wig. This time, however, she really will be sporting white-blonde hair while filming the final season.
Emilia Clarke’s hair is significantly shorter than Daenerys Targaryen’s, though, meaning if she really is ditching the wig entirely this year, that would indicate that Daenerys has a haircut on the horizon. Of course, Clarke could also simply wear extensions, but it seems like a lot of effort for her to bleach her hair only to wear extensions for the entirety of the season anyway. And if that’s the case, why would she do so this season in particular?
AAAAHHHHHHH SHHHHIIIII****** I done did it. Mother of dragons meet Emilia. Emilia meet mother of dragons. If you squint just so you might never know. ⚡️ All hail to the magnificence of @kevalexanderhair and @candicebanks74 the genius creators of 'KHALEESI WIG' (and not forgetting all the hair on game of thrones for 8 glorious years) for at long last making this magical moment a reality. ❤️ #khaleesikicksoff #gameofthrones #cominghomeneverfeltsogood
Clarke will almost certainly need to wear a wig or extensions for at least some amount of time, as Daenerys had long hair the last we saw her and it would be strange for that to change off camera. But fans are now theorizing that at some point in the first few episodes of Season 8, Daenerys’ hair will be cut, and so Clarke had it bleached today in preparation for being able to fully ditch wigs and extensions.
There’s some book evidence to back this up, as in A Dance With Dragons, a lot of Daenerys’ hair is burnt away when she tries to tame Drogon in Daznak’s Pit. In the show version of that scene, Daenerys didn’t get burnt at all and didn’t lose any hair, but either way, there’s precedence for Daenerys winding up with shorter hair.
Some fans suggest that Daenerys will wind up with shorter hair after she’s captured and it’s cut off, while others think she’ll cut it off on her own to give herself a sort of warrior look before a big battle. It’s also possible that she’ll pull a Dothraki and cut her hair after being defeated in battle. The Dothraki, of course, are known to cut their long braid after a defeat so that the world can see their shame.
Still, it’s entirely possible that Emilia Clarke just bleached her hair out of pure convenience and because she isn’t filming any projects over the next few months that require her to be a brunette. The actress has previously spoken about the fact that the wig she wears for Game of Thrones is quite cumbersome.
“The challenges are namely the physical aspects of being under the baking sun in a desert in Morocco with a wig on feeling very hot,” Clarke told The Los Angeles Times in 2014.
Game of Thrones Season 8 is expected to go into production next month, so we’ll get a better idea of what will happen to Daenerys’ hair when the first set photos are released.
