Gayle King Reacts to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Exit Drama: Why She Feels Bad for Queen Elizabeth
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s decision to exit the royal family may have been shocking to some, but not to those in the couple’s inner circle. CBS This Morning host Gayle King, who is close with Prince Harry and Meghan, shared her reaction to their move away from their royal duties… and her concerns about Queen Elizabeth during this drama.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision was supported by the queen
Following Prince Harry and Meghan’s announcement to “step back” from their roles, Queen Elizabeth called a special meeting with Prince Harry, Prince William, and Prince Charles to discuss the matter. She issued a statement in support of Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision, noting there were still details to finalize.
On Jan. 18, the queen shared her approval of Prince Harry and Meghan’s new life, releasing a statement that noted: “Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family. I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”
The same day, Buckingham Palace released a statement that revealed more details of the agreement, with Prince Harry and Meghan giving up their HRH titles and no longer receiving public funding as they make their move with Archie to Canada.
Gayle King reacted to the news
King, who is a close friend of Prince Harry and Meghan, offered some insight into the couple’s decision to leave their royal life behind.
King shared her support of their plan, telling Entertainment Tonight: “I think that they made a decision that they think is best for them, and I know that I’m pulling for them 100 percent.”
While she is supportive of her friends, given all they’ve been through with the media and public scrutiny, King noted that it was difficult to see the headlines about how Queen Elizabeth had been “blindsided” by the Sussexes’ plan.
She explained: “It’s very hard to look at the headlines that said [Queen Elizabeth II] was blindsided or they treated the queen shabbily. That’s why I really appreciated the statement from the queen herself saying these conversations have been going on for a very long time. And so it was tough to see her get so battered and beaten up in the press. At the end of the day, these are two people who are in love, who just want to be a family together. And it’s no diss on the queen. It’s no diss on the U.K., none of that.”
King has shared her concerns about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle before
This isn’t the first time that King has mentioned the struggles that Prince Harry and Meghan have experienced living in the spotlight. When Meghan made headlines for her extravagant New York City baby shower, which King attended, the morning anchor shared during CBS This Morning: “She’s a very private person. I think she should decide what she wants to say about this.”
When they came under fire for flying on private jets, King shared with Entertainment Tonight: “Harry and Meghan are entitled to go on vacation. Elton John offered to fly them on his private plane to his private home.”
King further noted: “Why are Meghan and Harry being singled out? I just think people think that they are easy targets. I think people don’t really appreciate and understand what the two of them have together. And I think, dare I say, that people are a little jealous out there and there are a lot of haters out there, but what I hope is that it doesn’t change them, because they are both trying to do good in the world, want to do good in the world and they are really good people.”
