George Clooney Says Royal Baby Is ‘Stealing My Thunder’
George Clooney, who shares a birthday with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s newborn son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, revealed his feelings about the baby’s name to Ellen DeGeneres. On an episode of her talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres and Clooney spoke about the royal baby’s birth.
Clooney on royal baby: He’s stealing my thunder’
DeGeneres told Clooney that he shares his birthday, May 6, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s newborn. “Yeah, I noticed that. That’s stealing my game, stealing my thunder,” the 58-year-old actor told DeGeneres.
The actor and his wife, Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer, are friends with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and attended their wedding last year. Clooney and Amal have twins together, a boy and a girl, who are two years old.
“It’s a good name,” Clooney said. “And it’s better than Jughead, too…”
“Well, if they have a sibling, now you’ve ruined it,” DeGeneres jokingly replied.
Clooney has defended Markle in the past
This isn’t the first time Clooney has spoken about Prince Harry and Markle. While he spoke about the couple’s newborn in a light, casual tone, he has made serious comments about the couple. In Feb. 2019, Clooney defended Markle against harsh criticism she received from the media.
“I do want to say, I just saw this piece…They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere,” he said, according to Who. “She’s been pursued and vilified. She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she is being pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that [Princess] Diana was, and it’s history repeating itself…and we’ve seen how that ends.”
In March 2019, he stood up for Markle again. “I think it’s a little unfair,” Clooney said on Good Morning Britain. “I’ve seen it when the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing and it seemed… to be a little unjust since she hadn’t done anything except just happen to live her life.”
How Clooney spent his birthday
Promoting his new Hulu series, Catch-22, Clooney sat down with Jimmy Kimmel on an episode of his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he talked about how he spent his birthday.
“My wife and I had dinner the two of us at home alone, which was really nice,” Clooney said. Instead of a gift — the actor joked that he got “nothing”– one of Amal Clooney’s high-profile cases came to a close.
Clooney explained the situation to Kimmel. “My wife has been, for the last year, working literally every single day, with a gentleman named Stephen Adler who runs Reuters, and a brilliant lawyer named Gail Gove, to get and to free the journalists, the Reuters journalists, from Myanmar. And a year of working on it and last night they walked out of prison,” he said.
“On my birthday we had a cake,” Kimmel replied laughing.
Besides his wife’s case coming to a close, Clooney said his daughter didn’t feel well. She woke up twice in the middle of the night on her dad’s birthday and ended up sleeping in bed with her parents. “You have to do it because she’s crying and she’s unhappy,” Clooney explained to Kimmel.
“And then she takes over the bed,” he added. After trying to sleep on the edge of the crowded bed, Clooney decided to sleep elsewhere. “And then I went and I slept in her nursery,” he said, making the Kimmel laugh.
