George Clooney Transcends Time in Mysterious ‘Tomorrowland’ Teaser
Details on director Brad Bird’s upcoming sci-fi fantasy adventure, Tomorrowland, have been kept top-secret for months, but now viewers are finally getting their first glimpse of the mysterious movie. A teaser trailer for the film was unveiled at New York Comic Con, and though brief, it’s already left many wanting more.
Both Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol) and writer Damon Lindelof (Prometheus, HBO’s The Leftovers) have been reluctant to confirm any specific details about the film and its plotline — a trend that only continued at the panel, which also included appearances from stars Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy, and Hugh Laurie. Neither the director nor the actors elaborated much on the film or their characters, instead only confirming the little we actually know about the movie. Even after the panel, we only know the basics: Tomorrowland, which gets it name from the theme land at Disney, follows Robertson as Casey Newton, a teen girl from Florida girl who, after getting into a bit a trouble, finds herself in possession of a mysterious pin that shows her another world when touched. Lindelof has previously compared the film to the the world of Harry Potter, telling Entertainment Weekly, “[Casey] is a Muggle who accidentally wanders across Platform 9 ¾ and sees something she probably shouldn’t have,” and that “What Hogwarts is to magic, Tomorrowland is to science.”
This is more or less what we see in the teaser, which keeps things similarly vague in the way of plot, but establishes a hopeful and ethereal feel. The clip shows Casey collecting her belongings after getting released from a police station. She picks up the pin and is just about to tell an officer that it doesn’t belong to her, when she is suddenly transported to a different world. None of the other stars make an appearance with one notable exception: George Clooney, who plays the reclusive character of Frank Walker.
In the official teaser, Clooney only appears briefly, describing the location where the pin takes you as “a miraculous place where you can actually change the world.” But Comic Con attendees got a more extensive look at his character, after the actor himself made a surprise appearance at the panel and brought along a second, lengthier clip from the film. Per EW, the extra footage showed Frank’s first encounter with Casey, in which she asks the loner for help returning to the world where the pin took her. Though he refuses, she eventually finds a way to sneak in to the house, which is outfitted with laser beams, electric shocks, magnetic walls, and other crazy devices.
Having gotten those brief looks at Bird’s passion project, critics and moviegoers alike seem eager to see more — and for good reason. Though the teaser trailer may leave us with more questions than answers, the few details that are revealed in those 2 minutes certainly show plenty of promise. In addition to boasting a high-quality team on both the acting and the producing fronts, the film also already looks to be cinematically gorgeous, switching between a gray, drab “real” world and the vibrant, almost shimmering Tomorrowland. The trailer also gives us a hint at the reason behind Bird’s careful safeguarding of the project — to help the audience build up the same sense of discovery touched upon in the movie.
Tomorrowland is scheduled to hit theaters on May 22, 2015.
