‘Game of Thrones’: George R.R. Martin Originally Planned For Jon Snow and Arya Stark To Fall In Love
We all openly enjoy the twisted mind of George R.R. Martin. After all, without the A Song of Ice and Fire novelist –there would be no Game of Thrones. Inspired by Lord of the Rings legend, J. R. R. Tolkien –Martin introduced the world to Westeros in the early ’90s with his first book of the series — A Game of Thrones, and in 2011 it became the hit HBO show.
Though the TV show is set to end in the coming weeks –Martin has yet to release his final two books in the franchise —The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. As a result –HBO has had to embellish some of the plot points and characters. However, this hasn’t stopped Martin from giving fans a glimpse into his original outline for the epic saga.
George R.R. Martin originally wanted Jon Snow and Arya Stark to fall in love
Martin has never shied away from incest in his novels. Twin brother/sister duo –Cersei Lannister and Jamie Lannister have been engaged in an illustrious affair for most of their lives. Also, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen have also fallen into bed with each other –even though they are a nephew/aunt pairing.
However, in original outline for A Song of Ice and Fire –Martin was going to have Jon Snow and his little sister, Arya Stark, develop a romantic relationship. Not only would it have been gross– it would have changed Game of Thrones as we know it. In the outline, Martin wrote,
Wounded by Lannister riders, they will seek refuge at the Wall, but the men of the Night’s Watch give up their families when they take the black, and Jon and Benjen will not be able to help, to Jon’s anguish. It will lead to a bitter estrangement between Jon and Bran Arya will be more forgiving … until she realizes, with terror, that she has fallen in love with Jon, who is not only her half-brother but a man of the Night’s Watch, sworn to celibacy. Their passion will continue to torment Jon and Arya throughout the trilogy, until the secret of Jon’s true parentage is finally revealed in the last book.
Tyrion Lannister was also supposed to fall in love with Arya
Tyrion hasn’t exactly been lucky at love. As a teenager, he married a lady of the night –until her real occupation was exposed. Later he fell in love with Shae –a prostitute whom ultimately betrayed him. Tyrion killed Shae in retaliation. These days –the trickiest Lannister seems to be pining after Daenerys Targaryen –even though she’s with Jon Snow.
Originally –Martin was also going to have Tyrion fall head over heels in love with Arya –making him a bitter rival of Jon. He wrote,
Exiled, Tyrion will change sides, making common cause with the surviving Starks to bring his brother down, and falling helplessly in love with Arya Stark while he’s at it. His passion is, alas, un-reciprocated, but no less intense for that, and it will lead to a deadly rivalry between Tyrion and Jon Snow.
In our opinion –it doesn’t even matter who is paired with who –everyone is going to die anyway as soon as the Night King makes his grand debut.
