Gigi Hadid Says She ‘Resents’ Fame But Has Also ‘Learned A Lot’ Because of It
Gigi Hadid is one of the most famous models in the world. With over 50 million followers on Instagram and a net worth of $19 million, Hadid seems to be at the top of her game at the moment. She has admirers from all corners of the globe and everything she does gets talked about.
However, life in the spotlight has definitely not been easy. The 24-year-old recently opened up to Variety about how difficult things can be when one is as popular as she is. In fact, she revealed that at times she actually “resents” fame.
Gigi Hadid initially got a bit of attention thanks to her mother
Hadid first entered the public’s consciousness in the early 2010s. At the time, her mother, Yolanda, was a regular cast member on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which allowed Hadid and her siblings to occasionally appear on the show.
Hadid was mostly known for being Yolanda’s teenage daughter who wanted to pursue modeling. RHOBH viewers got to see some of Hadid’s struggles and successes as she tried to make it big in the fashion industry.
Gigi Hadid became more well-known in 2014 and 2015
While Hadid got some exposure on TV for a while, she did not become a star until around 2014 and 2015.
After signing with IMG Models, she began landing runway shows for popular brands, such as Chanel, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors. Hadid also appeared on the covers of magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Allure. Additionally, she shot ad campaigns for Tom Ford and Maybelline.
In December 2015, Hadid got her name even more out there when she walked for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Hadid’s personal life attracted attention as well. She began dating Zayn Malik sometime in late 2015, and the media could not get enough of the relationship.
A year later, she appeared in the music video for his song “Pillowtalk,” but the two of them later broke up in 2018.
How Gigi Hadid copes with fame
On the surface, Hadid seems like she has it all – money, a hugely successful career, and tons of dedicated followers. However, dealing with fame is a different story.
In an interview with Variety, Hadid got teary-eyed as she candidly shared her thoughts on being a celebrity. Hadid revealed: “I’ve had my ups and downs with [fame] for sure, because overall, it’s definitely a learning process.
I’ve learned a lot about myself because of it. I’ve learned to be honest with myself and celebrate myself, protect myself, be assertive when I need to… Although in moments I’ve resented it, I think that overall, I wouldn’t be as developed within myself without it.”
She went on to describe the ways in which fame can really drain someone. “People judge you,” Hadid said. “People can create a headline or an opinion about someone based on a small moment or a mistake.”
However, Hadid shared that she definitely tries to “learn and improve” whenever she makes a mistake, and she also cherishes one-on-one interaction with other people.
“The more opportunity that I have to meet people and share my genuine self or sit with them or talk to them, that gives me so much empowerment, because I feel like I can control that moment,” Hadid said.
In a 2017 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Hadid also talked about what it is like to have friends as a famous person.
She shared that, from her experience, she prefers to have “a few really good friends than tons of friends you aren’t really sure about.”
This is exacerbated by the fact that Hadid is an extremely busy person and her schedule would not allow time to connect with many people.
