Will Gina Rodriguez Be In The ‘Jane The Virgin’ Spin-Off Series?
The acclaimed CW dramedy series Jane the Virgin has been airing for four years on the network. Starring Gina Rodriguez in the eponymous role, the show is based on a telenovela and plays on many of the genre’s common tropes. Now, a spin-off has been announced, and fans may be wondering if Rodriguez will star in it. Here’s what we know about this development.
Gina Rodriguez plays Jane on Jane the Virgin
Rodriguez had been acting for years prior to the series, but her big break came when she landed the role of Jane Villanueva on Jane the Virgin. Jane is a writer, and the show is focused on her family life as well as her budding career.

In May 2018, the announcement came that Jane the Virgin was renewed for a fifth and final season. This was a pre-planned decision, with creator Jennie Snyder Urman noting that she was given creative control to have the show last as long as she had a story to tell. She wants the final season to leave viewers with “a real sense of closure at the end.”
A spin-off series was announced
In December 2018, it was reported that a Jane the Virgin spinoff was in development. This was officially announced on the 2019 TCA winter press tour, with Rodriguez herself confirming the pilot news on Instagram. The “telenovela-inspired anthology series” will follow different stories written by Jane, so each season will be completely different.
