‘God Friended Me’ Has Been Canceled, But Fans Say We Need the Show More Than Ever Right Now
God Friended Me has been canceled after two seasons, CBS announced on April 14. A two-hour series finale will air Sunday, April 26 at 8/7c.
The series finale will wrap up the story of the God account
“We’re extremely proud of the unique concept and uplifting stories God Friended Me has told over the past two seasons,” CBS and WBTV said in a joint statement. “We thank the brilliant cast, writers, production team and crew for a show that stirred thoughtful conversation about faith, life, and happiness, and made viewers feel good at the end of each episode. The creative team behind the show has one last ‘friend suggestion’ in mind, as well as an ending we hope brings a satisfying conclusion to Miles’ journey in search of the God Account.”
While viewers are just learning of the cancellation now, the show’s team has known for a while that this season would be their last, which gave them time to develop a proper series finale, Deadline reported.
Fans say ‘God Friended Me’ is just the show we need right now
Unsurprisingly, fans were disappointed to learn that God Friended Me is coming to an end. On Twitter, many argued that the uplifting show, about a committed atheist whose life changes when he received a social media friend request from God, is exactly the kind of positive TV we need in these uncertain times.
“At a time where we could use all the feel-good shows we could get, the network decides to dump it. Too bad,” tweeted one person.
“So sad to hear that #GodFriendedMe has been canceled after two seasons,” another wrote. “This show has brought me so much joy and hope. It’s a show that inspires people to think about the most important things in life.”
“We need that show now more than ever!!!” declared a fan.
CBS didn’t offer a reason for the cancellation, but after a strong freshman season, the show’s ratings slipped in season 2, Deadline noted.
Will Miles find out who is behind the God account?
Since the show’s debut, the big mystery of God Friended Me has been who is behind the God account. This season, Miles (Brandon Micheal Hall) has been getting closer to discovering the truth. But we still don’t know exactly who has been sending him messages.
CBS has promised viewers a “satisfying conclusion” to God Friended Me. Fans are undoubtedly hoping that means the person who is running the God account will finally be revealed. But so far, the network has not released an episode synopsis or trailer for the series finale, so we’ll just have to wait and see how the story unfolds in the last episodes.
God Friended Me airs Sundays at 8/7c on CBS.
