Awards season has been in swing for a few weeks now, and finally the nominations for the second-best, and often more exciting, ceremony to the Oscars have been announced. It looks like Birdman is going to continue its awards season domination that began when the film took home Best Feature and star Michael Keaton got the trophy for Best Actor at the Gotham Independent Film Awards. While neither the Gothams nor the Golden Globes are necessarily perfect indicators of future Oscar glory, Birdman’s success at both seems to suggest that it’s headed for possibly multiple wins at the Academy Awards.

Birdman’s Golden Globe nominations include Best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu, Best Motion Picture in the Comedy or Musical category, and acting awards for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, and Emma Stone. The movie is about a washed-up former Hollywood star played by Keaton who’s best known for top-lining the superhero franchise Birdman. He decides to lay his entire financial, emotional, and professional life on the line in order to stage a Broadway adaptation of a Raymond Carver short story that the inexperienced actor plans to write, direct, and star in himself.

Stone plays his daughter, who has come to work as his assistant after a stint in rehab. Norton plays the unpredictable Method actor brought in to do a supporting role and help the play appeal to critics.

Richard Linklater’s coming of age movie Boyhood, which he famously shot over the course of 12 years as the actors really aged, was behind Birdman with five nominations as well as the WWII Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game. Linklater was also nominated for best director and the film’s script, and stars Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke are up for supporting actor awards. The Imitation Game got a best picture nod as well as acting ones for Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley.

The Golden Globes are considered to be a more fun version of the Oscars because the ceremony has a separate category for comedies and musicals, as well as television. Comedians Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are set to host the Globes again this year and the funny duo of real-life best friends always make for a hilarious evening.

The Globes are best at predicting the acting awards at the Oscars. According to The New York Daily News, nine out of 10 actors who won a Golden Globe also went on to win the Oscar in both the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. In typical Oscar fashion, the award has mostly gone to the winners in the Globe’s drama category. When it comes to Best Picture, however, the Globes have been less accurate. Only four films that have won the best feature Golden Globe have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars in the last ten years, although the ceremony has been on a recent roll and gotten it right for the past three years.

Should Birdman get any of those acting trophies or even take home best comedy or musical, the film will be poised to win at least one Oscar on film’s biggest night.
