‘Goliath’: Everything You Need to Remember Before Watching Season 3
The new season of Goliath is bringing some serious Chinatown vibes as alcoholic lawyer Billy McBride (Billy Bob Thornton) gets caught up in a major case involving California’s most valuable resource: water.
In season 3 of the Amazon Prime legal drama created by David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro, which premiered October 4, the unexpected death of an old friend leads Billy to the state’s drought-stricken Central Valley. There, he takes on billionaire farmer Wade Blackwood (Dennis Quaid) and his sister (Amy Brenneman), who are plotting to steal California’s water. Billy and his team, including Patty Solis-Papagian (Nina Arianda) and Brittany Gold (Tania Raymonde), pursue the truth as old enemies and personal demons resurface.
What happened in ‘Goliath’ Season 2?
Each season of Goliath focuses on a different case. In season one, Billy took on his former law firm in a complicated wrongful death case — a case he ultimately won.
The second season of Goliath was a bit different. The season begins when one of the employees at his bar, Chez Jay, asks Billy to defend his 16-year-old son Julio on a murder charge, a crime the father insists his boy didn’t commit. As he fights to free Julio, Billy gets tangled in a much larger conspiracy involving L.A. politics, a Mexican drug cartel, and a creepy real estate developer named Tom Wyatt (Mark Duplass) with an amputee fetish.
Season 2 had some memorable moments, such as the disturbing scene in the last episode where cartel leader Gabriel amputates all of Tom’s limbs. The season was also divisive, as the proverbial David doesn’t take down Goliath. The cartel gets away with its crimes and the corrupt mayoral candidate Marisol Silva ends up winning the election. Billy and Marisol had embarked on a romance earlier in the season, but in the end she dumps him, leaving Billy both defeated and heartbroken.
Expect more craziness in ‘Goliath’ Season 3
The new season of Goliath takes Billy out of Los Angeles and into a less glamorous part of California. Billy is still coming to terms with his breakup with Marisol, but don’t expect the show to dwell too much on the events of season 2.
“There’s some leftover stuff. Not a lot, but there is some,” Thornton explained in an interview with HollywoodLife.
Viewers should also be prepared for some bizarre happenings. In the first episode, a married couple played by Twin Peaks’s Sherilyn Fenn and Griffin Dunne from This Is Us experience a deadly incident in their home. And Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner makes an appearance (as himself) as the new man in Marisol’s life. Thornton also hinted that the relationship between Quain and Brenneman’s sibling characters is not what you might expect.
“[T]he relationship between him and his sister is just so weird that I don’t know what the hell is going on with it,” the actor explained.
Goliath Season 3 is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
