‘The Good Place’ Final Season: Is This Why There’s No New Footage For Season 4?

It’s September, which means that fall TV is right around the corner. One of the first to begin its season is NBC’s hit The Good Place. Because this is the show’s final season, fans are even more eager to get first-glimpse footage from it. But sadly, we haven’t seen any yet. Let’s explore why that may be.

‘The Good Place’ has aired on NBC for three seasons

Mike Schur’s third comedy, The Good Place, began airing on NBC in 2016. It stars Kristen Bell, Jameela Jamil, William Jackson Harper, and Manny Jacinto as four humans who discover they’re in what appears to be heaven, in a neighborhood along with its architect, Michael (Ted Danson) and an all-knowing nonhuman named Janet (D’Arcy Carden).

We won’t spoil it for you, but there are plenty of twists and turns in this series about life, death, and moral philosophy. The show has become a hit amongst people of all ages and has even been nominated for various Emmys and other awards over the years.

Season 4 of ‘The Good Place’ will be the show’s last

Of course, all good things must come to an end. For most series, this comes when the network cancels the show due to poor ratings, or when it’s been on so long that the stars are ready to move on. But in the case of The Good Place, it was for a much better reason.

In a statement shared in June 2019, Schur announced that the upcoming fourth season will be the show’s last. He said that he felt that four seasons was “the right lifespan” for The Good Place, adding that he is “forever grateful” for being able to make the show his way.

There is new promotional material for Season 4

At San Diego-Comic Con, Schur and the cast indicated that they were almost done with filming, stating that the finale’s script was nearly finished. Not long after, stars like Jamil and Marc Evan Jackson shared their goodbyes on social media after finishing their final scenes. And in August, Instagram stories revealed that the wrap party had occurred around the middle of the month. So all that’s left to do is wait.

In the meantime, it would be great to get some footage, right? Well, don’t hold your breath. Though we’ve been gifted with promotional videos like the one above and first-look images like the one below, it looks like they’re keeping a lot under wraps.

Here’s what we know about the final season

Since we don’t know exactly why they’re keeping things a secret — other than to build anticipation, or perhaps because there’s nothing that wouldn’t be a spoiler — all we can do is talk about what we do know. Season 4 will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 26 with what appears to be a 2-part episode, titled “A Girl From Arizona.”

Given the title, and that we know that Chidi has been rebooted (which will affect Eleanor greatly) there’s definitely a focus on Bell’s character here. We also know that there will be a total of 14 episodes in The Good Place Season 4, concluding with an hour-long two-parter. Now, all that’s left to do is wait the few weeks until the premiere.
