Kate Middleton is often under intense scrutiny from the media, ever since becoming the Duchess of Cambridge. She has had some controversial moments in the past, and some of them were due to her outfit choices. But most would agree that she has great style and is now a style icon.
It all started with her wedding dress, which became such a focal point in fashion that it has its own Wikipedia page. Many brides also scoured the world for replicas in order to recreate the iconic fashion moment. So it’s no surprise that women still follow the Duchess’ lead when it comes to fashion.
But do you have to pay big to dress like a royal? The answer is no. She often mixes high-end clothes with affordable pieces, and there are usually budget-friendly versions of what she wears. Here are seven gorgeous Middleton-inspired outfits that are actually affordable.
1. The Eden Project outfit
- GAP Bi-stretch skinny ankle pants (the exact pants) 12.99–49.95 pounds (the equivalent of $16.85–$64.80)
- Ann Taylor’s two-button jacket $139.99
- Basic white top $39.50
- Jessica Simpson Malia Pump $29.97
- Outfit total: Up to $279.41
The royal couple made a visit to the Eden Project in 2016. Middleton spiced up her business outfit with some cute patterned pants. It has been confirmed by the Mirror that the pants are from Gap. They are still available, although not in the exact same pattern as the one Middleton wore.
She paired the pants with a higher end Smythe blazer. You can swap this out with a more affordable option and still look professional. Underneath, you can go with a basic white top that could be worn multiple times in future professional outfits.
This ensemble is a great business casual ensemble. It’s totally professional without being too expected or boring, thanks to the fun printed pants.
2. Alexander McQueen dress
- ASOS Lace Pencil Dress with Contrast Lining $40.00
- “Juliet” Pearl White Round Felt Sinamay Hat $62.00
- Outfit total: $102.00
The Duchess of Cambridge actually received flack from some for attending the Royal Ascot in this lace Alexander McQueen dress. But if you ask us, she looks appropriate and stylish for the event. It’s definitely a great outfit for a daytime event.
You can find alternative, budget-friendly options above.
3. Rochas Green Dahlia-Print midi dress
Middleton checked out the Chelsea Flower Show in this green, daliah printed Rochas midi dress. It’s now sold out and was at the high price point of $2,000. Luckily, you can get a similar dress on Amazon for a lot less.
4. Marchesa gown
- ASOS Lace Prom Dress $81.00
Middleton hit the red carpet in this maroon Marchesa gown at a West End premiere. ASOS has another version of this dress — also in a vibrant color — that would be perfect for a formal event. You can feel like a showstopper, just like Kate.
5. Alexander McQueen maxi dress
It looks like the royal is also into the off-the-shoulder look to keep cool during the summer. She wore this red Alexander McQueen maxi dress in July 2017. The good news is that this trend and color is so popular, there are actually multiple affordable versions of it.
6. Preen by Thornton Bregazzi ‘Everly’ dress
- Ever Pretty 3/4 Sleeve Ruched Waist Classy V-Neck Casual Cocktail Dress $17.99–$38.49
- YMING Women’s Vintage Sleeveless Classy Party Cocktail Blue Swing Tea Dress $14.99–$19.99
Also in July 2017. Middleton appeared at the Natural History Museum Gala in a beautiful A-line dress from Preen. The pale blue is a beautiful color and something you can easily recreate for a formal event. There are two similar dresses on Amazon that won’t break the bank.
7. See by Chloé dress
Kate Middleton rocked this See by Chloé dress while hosting a party at the palace. It’s $460.00, but you can get the same look for a lot less. Try it by pairing a lace top with a skirt, then topping the whole look off with a belt.
