Is ‘Gotham City Sirens’ Still in Development Following Joker and Harley Quinn Announcement?
Warner Bros. is developing a spinoff movie about The Joker and Harley Quinn, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This news was a bit surprising, as the studio has already announced a Harley Quinn spinoff movie: Gotham City Sirens. So is this new film a replacement for that one? Or are they both in development?
Warner Bros. has not yet made an official announcement about the future of Gotham City Sirens, and thus far, there has been some conflicting information about this. The Tracking Board is reporting that the new Joker and Harley Quinn movie is actually a replacement for Sirens and that this film about female Batman villains will no longer come out. According to this report, the Joker and Quinn movie “would take the place of Gotham City Sirens, which has been reconceived.”
Jeff Sneider, the editor-in-chief of The Tracking Board, also tweeted, “R.I.P. GOTHAM CITY SIRENS. We hardly knew ye…”
Deadline’s report of this story originally backed up The Tracking Board, saying that Gotham City Sirens is being scrapped in favor of the Joker and Harley Quinn movie. However, they have since altered their story to suggest that Sirens may still be happening. Deadline now reports, “this one is apparently different from Gotham City Sirens, a different Harley Quinn spinoff meant to showcase several top female villains from the DC stable which Suicide Squad director David Ayer is attached to direct.”
Hopefully, Warner Bros. will soon confirm whether Sirens is still on. But for now, there’s at least one report from a reputable outlet suggesting that the movie is no longer happening and that the studio is instead retooling it into a movie about Joker and Harley Quinn.
If that really does end up being the case, it would not be too shocking. David Ayer was set to direct Sirens, but there have been rumors that he might not be involved in the DC Extended Universe for much longer, with Mashaable reporting in July that Ayer is not a part of DC’s plans for the future. Ayer and his representatives had denied that he would be leaving Sirens.
Gotham City Sirens was announced as a movie about three female Batman villains: Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn. David Ayer signed on as director, opting not to direct Suicide Squad 2.
“It’s a story about three fantastic women who’re trying to find their way in the world, and realize that they have more power together than they do individually,” Ayer told IGN of Gotham City Sirens. “I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit.”
Suicide Squad 2 is still in development as well, and The Hollywood Reporter reports that Warner Bros. is looking to fast-track this sequel. The Joker and Harley Quinn spinoff will be released sometime after Suicide Squad 2. DC is also working on a standalone Joker movie, but this one won’t take place in the DC Extended Universe and will not star Jared Leto.
