‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Camilla Luddington Responds to Backlash for Cast Wearing KN95 Masks
This season of Grey’s Anatomy started with the doctors dealing with the pandemic. The cast also went to great lengths to film safely. Camilla Luddington responded to a fan accusing the cast of wasting equipment.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 started with the pandemic
The new season started with Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) greeting her husband, Ben Warren (Jason George) in personal protective equipment (PPE). We then find out the married couple is staying apart because of the pandemic as their kids are staying with family.
The rest of the characters continued to socially distance and wear their masks throughout the episode. There were moments that gave thanks to first responders, but also managed to catch fans up on the personal lives of the characters.
The cast had to follow a lot of rules to film
The cast members also had to keep their distance from each other. The actors were assigned to pods, and they were tested differently based on their exposure, according to Esquire.
Showrunner Krista Vernoff also talked to Variety about how they filmed this season. “It’s social distancing, it’s masks, it’s visors — it’s masks on the actors between takes and during rehearsals,” she said. Actors were also not allowed to speak as they got their hair and makeup done because they couldn’t wear protection.
“Everyone was willing to scale the mountain,” Vernoff claimed. “I keep saying to people, ‘No, no really, we’ve actually reinvented the wheel. We are changing everything everyone has ever understood about how you make television.”
Camilla Luddington responded to a fan saying they’re wasting PPE
Some fans were upset to see the cast members using KN95 masks when there’s a shortage. One tweeted, “You don’t need to be wearing a N95/KN95 mask behind the scenes. You don’t need to be wasting PPE. A disposable mask will work just fine.”
The actor then responded with, “If you see any of us wearing KN95s behind the scenes it’s because we are wearing our costume masks. We don’t also get an extra KN95 to wear between takes.”
Other cast members also tweeted about filming for the show. “@TheRealKMcKidd how do you feel about the premiere?” one fan asked. “So proud to be part of it – huge effort on all fronts to get our show back during covid,” answered Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen Hunt.
It sounds like the actors took a lot of precautions to film this new season. Although most of the episode was about healthcare workers in the thick of the pandemic, fans also got a break from the pandemic at the end of the episode with a surprise return of an original character.
