‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans Are Now Certain Showrunner, Krista Vernoff Is Actively Using Reddit for New Plot Ideas

The critically acclaimed ABC series, Grey’s Anatomy, is now well into season 16, with no plans to end. When the showrunner and creator, Shonda Rhimes turned the reigns over to Krista Vernoff and Ellen Pompeo, she thought she left the series in good hands.

However, the more fans watch, the more they believe that Vernoff is searching Reddit for new ideas, reminders, and suggestions. Let’s take a look at why they think this theory is correct.

Fans got what they predicted with the Zola storyline

Users on Reddit often have suggested that the Grey’s Anatomy showrunners visit Reddit for plot ideas and suggestions. This season, they believe it really is true.

Following the episode in which Zola (Aniela Gumbs) undergoes surgery on her shunt, fans on Reddit wrote, “The writers DID remember that Zola had spina bifida!”

Another user suggested, “Maybe they search this Subreddit for ideas.” To which many fans chimed in.

One user wrote, “That’s exactly what I’m saying! After this episode, I’m 100% convinced Krista comes here for new plot ideas! First, she broke up Jaggie. Second, I feel like we have gotten more Cristina references in the past five episodes than in the past five seasons. Then finally, she remembered about Zola’s spina bifida. A little late, but I guess better late than never?”

Let’s take a look at a few other reasons that confirm Reddit users’ suspicions.

Reddit users accurately predicted plotlines involving both Amelia and Jo

Either fans are really good at predicting what’s going to happen, or Vernoff reads the Grey’s Anatomy subreddit.

After the discovery earlier this season that Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) was pregnant, fans took to Reddit to debate whether or not she would keep the baby.

Many concluded what this user wrote, “I completely agree that an abortion wouldn’t seem right for Amelia’s character at this point.”

Low and behold, Amelia decides to keep the baby, and fans are right yet again. Then, fans also predicted that the storyline following Jo’s (Camilla Luddington) mental health should not end.

“Jo dealing with depression shouldn’t be over, IMO. I think they can do more with it. Raise awareness. Mental health is a huge taboo and usually done in a very dramatic way,” another Reddit user wrote.

A few episodes later, Jo’s therapist ends up in Grey-Sloan, and the mental health of both Jo and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) resurfaces again.

It looks like Luddington wholeheartedly agreed with fans on this one, “Thank you, @KristaVernoff, for continuing to show this journey for Jo, this ep means a lot to me.” Luddington wrote that comment on Twitter the evening that the mental health episode aired.

We can see that Vernoff, Luddington, and fans are all on the same page about that plotline.

Vernoff does read and respond to fan thoughts and comments

We know as a celebrity, it is challenging to respond to all fan reactions and comments, but we often notice Vernoff replying and retweeting what fans write on Twitter.

She retweeted a comment recently to confirm that fans should be laughing at Bailey. She also retweeted this comment from a fan, “I’m scared all the time, but I’m brave  #GreysAnatomy.”

This makes us wonder if she also reads the Grey’s Anatomy subreddit community. It does seem entirely plausible. She also may just have gotten particularly good at giving the fans what she knows they want.

Either way, we love the way this season is going. You can watch new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy every Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
