‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Fans’ Calzona Love Is Still Going Strong After All This Time
Grey’s Anatomy is just one of many incredible shows that superstar Shonda Rhimes has put out throughout her successful career. A mastermind behind the scene, Rhimes has a knack for creating unforgettable dramas revolving around the legal and medical systems.
Grey’s Anatomy debuted in 2005 and has been running strong on ABC ever since. In fact, the premiere of the 16th season will be gracing the network late next month.
The medical drama tells the story of a group of doctors who call Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital home. It gives viewers a peek into their careers as well as their relationships as they figure out how to balance their work and personal lives.
But being over a decade old, the show has seen some beloved characters come and go, and with it their stories written right out of the script.
Why Dr. Callie Torres left ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Dr. Callie Torres, played by Sara Ramirez, was a real fan favorite for over a decade. What made Torres so special? She was the ONLY bisexual character who called Grey’s Anatomy home.
Sure, it’s something that didn’t come out until later, but when it did fans were over enjoyed. The beloved doctor wasn’t just representational of the LGBTQ community through her orientation; she even engaged in romantic relationships with both genders on the show!
In fact, Torres left a relationship with a male doctor to pursue one with fellow doctor Arizona Robbins. The bond resulted in Torres becoming not just one of the most complex characters on TV, but also one of the most celebrated on television as a whole.
So, when she left to take a much-needed break, fans were devastated.
Now that some time has elapsed, Rhimes would love to have Ramirez back on the show. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. The sought after actress is now working on CBS’ Madam Secretary.
Recognizing the star power Ramirez has, CBS refused to let the actress double star on ABC, even if the initial request was just a guest slot! But, based on a tweet the Grey’s Anatomy alum posted, a return might very well be possible.
Why Dr. Arizona Robbins is no longer on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Unlike Ramirez who walked away from the show on her own two feet, Arizona Robbins was written off! Jessica Capshaw’s character is just one of many characters who was pushed out of the Grey’s universe. Initially, people thought Capshaw and fellow star Sarah Drew left because of Ellen Pompeo’s substantial pay raise. She denied the claims and had plenty of people to back her up.
Drew for one wasn’t very fond of her character as she was stagnant, but Arizona Robbins was a significant character on the show. After all, she was in a relationship with Dr. Torres, which meant that she too was a part of increasing visibility for the LGBTQ community.
Unfortunately, the writers felt that dropping some characters would help make space for new storylines, and these two were on the chopping block.
“The decision to make changes to our cast was a creative one. The only thing as constant on Grey’s Anatomy as Ellen Pompeo is our penchant for reinvention.” – Krista Vernoff
Fans still miss Dr. Torres and Dr. Robbins
Affectionately dubbed Calzona, fans are still rallying to get back one of their favorite LGBTQ couples. All they want is to see Dr. Torres and Dr. Robbins back together, but considering they’re both off the show that might be difficult to achieve.
According to a recent Reddit thread, fans don’t have much stake in the matter, but a return would spell quite the successful episode for the show.
“I would loooooove to see an episode in New York with Calzona. We could see Dr Herman, maybe Addie could fly in for a special case…all of my favorite characters back again, and I’m envisioning a funny scene at a NYC bar 😂 I know with production and how some of the actresses left, we wouldn’t ever get it, but I would love it 🥰 added bonus for getting to see Sofia grown up.” – Reddit user u/justforfun1820
If the writers really wanted to pen these two back in, there’s inspiration all over the internet it seems! The same thread even talks about how a spin-off could be written based on some of these characters!
But how would any of this be pulled off? Ramirez would need the go-ahead from both CBS and ABC to appear on both networks. Capshaw would just need to be written back in as she currently has no productions on her roster that would prevent her from coming back! Fingers crossed that both are willing to make a return one day.
