‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans Still Aren’t Over These Tragic Character Deaths

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy have been through a lot of ups and downs the last 15 seasons. Through the good times and the bad times, true fans have stayed loyal – despite having their hearts ripped out of their chests multiple times.

As a hospital-based television drama, there have been a great number of deaths over the course of 15 long seasons, but some of them were much more painful than others. If you want to know which of those deaths Grey’s Anatomy fans still aren’t over, look no further.

3. George O’Malley

Season 5 was a huge tear-jerker. After Doctor George O’Malley (played by T.R. Knight) jumps in front of a bus to save a woman he doesn’t even know, he is dragged by it until his body is not even identifiable.

The staff didn’t want to believe that their beloved surgeon had died, but it appeared to be confirmed when he and Doctor Izzie Stevens meet in an elevator at the end of the season. Dressed in their best, it is generally assumed they were meeting in heaven.

Fans have still not gotten over O’Malley’s death many seasons later.

2. Henry Burton

Henry Burton first appears in Grey’s Anatomy as a patient with Von-Hippel-Lindau Syndrome. He has no insurance, however, so Teddy offers to marry him so that he can be put under her insurance and receive the treatment he needs.

Although he initially declines her offer, Burton finally accepts. Although the marriage is fake, Burton eventually confesses how much he truly loves Teddy – but she politely turns him down on his offer of being together for real.

Eventually, Henry Burton needs surgery (and not the first one, either). Cristina does the surgery, unaware of who her patient is. Despite trying less invasive measures, she eventually has to open him up because the tumor Cristina was operating on was just too large. It caused extensive bleeding, and his heart finally gave out – unable to withstand that much blood loss.

Fans were so torn apart with the loss of Henry Burton because he was kind, charming, and absolutely in love with Teddy. It wasn’t just that, however. He highly valued his relationships with every doctor at the hospital, and proved to be an amazing friend to everyone.

Watching Cristina’s face when she pulls back the face covering and realizes who she had been operating on slammed the heartbreak home and brought on the water works for everyone watching.

1. Derek Shepherd

Derek Shepherd had been through hell and back during the first ten seasons, but the eleventh season would prove to be his worst. While on his way for a last trip to Washington D.C., he spots a car accident. Being the good guy that he is, he stops to offer his assistance until the medics arrive.

Once everyone is taken care of, Shepherd goes to get into his car, which is still parked sideways across the road. He reaches for his phone and never notices the approaching semi, which crashes into his vehicle. When he arrives at the hospital, he knows that he needs a CT scan of his head, but the attending doctors don’t realize this until it’s too late.

When Derek’s wife, Meredith Grey, arrives at the hospital she finds her husband has been pronounced brain dead. She signs the paperwork to take him off life support.

Fans had a big issue with this death, because everyone wanted him and Meredith to have their happily ever after. After everything each had gone through, it seemed well deserved – but unfortunately, the show’s writers didn’t see it that way.
