‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Here’s Why We Think Amelia Will Keep Her Baby
Grey’s Anatomy has recently begun its record-breaking 16th season on ABC. The medical drama has seen many characters come and go. One such character is Caterina Scorsone’s Amelia Shepherd, who recently received some shocking news. Will she keep the baby? Here’s what we know.
Caterina Scorsone plays Amelia Shepherd in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Scorsone first appeared as Amelia Shepherd, neurosurgeon and sister of the now-deceased Derek Shepherd, years ago. However, it wasn’t until Season 11 that she became a full member of the cast when Amelia began working at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Amelia has, like so many of the characters, had a lot of ups and downs during her time on the show. She’s had a brain tumor removed not too long ago, which had been affecting many of her decisions. She was also married to and then subsequently divorced Owen Hunt.
The Season 16 premiere revealed her pregnancy
Part of the reason Amelia and Owen could never seem to work out was that she didn’t want to have children. Though she ended up co-parenting with him when he adopted Leo, she didn’t want to have a family. That’s why the Season 16 premiere episode reveal was so big.
Amelia comes to Carina DeLuca, an OB-GYN at Grey Sloan, to ask for an interesting favor to help spice up her relationship with Atticus “Link” Lincoln. However, Carina thinks that Amelia’s there because she’s pregnant. Amelia then realizes that Carina has picked up on something she hadn’t even known about herself.
Amelia’s had a tragic past
This is not the first time Amelia has been pregnant. The character was previously on Private Practice, a since-canceled Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. In the series, Amelia, who has relapsed with regard to her addiction to opioids, finds herself pregnant with the child of her fiance, who overdosed.
Amelia gets clean before she knows she’s pregnant, but sadly, it’s too late: The baby is discovered to be anencephalic, which means his brain never developed. Amelia considers terminating the pregnancy but instead decides to give birth to the child, naming him Christopher and donating his healthy organs. She tells Link about this after informing him that she’s pregnant.
It looks like she’s going to keep the baby
Link, as it turns out, is also scarred by his own trauma. As a child, he had cancer and tells his friend Jo Karev that he’s afraid to bring a baby into this world, but after he and Amelia talk, they both seem to be changed their minds and are considering moving forward with the pregnancy.
In a recent interview, Scorsone essentially confirmed this. “I think Amelia is more prepared to have a baby now for a lot of reasons,” she said. “Speaking about one’s pain and trauma can be incredibly healing, and I think a combination of her grieving Christopher properly and parenting Leo and Betty with so much love, a lot of Amelia’s fear and trauma was healed.”
Will Link and Amelia get a happy ending?
But while they may have decided to co-parent, it’s hard to say whether or not Amelia and Link will make it as a couple. They had recently decided to slow down and date other people (Amelia’s idea, not Link’s), and while they may not be pursuing that avenue anymore, it doesn’t look like they’re moving toward marriage just yet. We’ll have to wait and see.
