‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Is Sandra Oh The Major Character Returning For Season 16

There have been plenty of casting changes on Grey’s Anatomy over the years, but Season 16 could see the return of a major character in Sandra Oh’s Christina Yang. Oh has not been a part of the hit medical drama since she left in Season 10, but showrunner Krista Vernoff recently teased that she wants to bring back a special character this season. The comment sparked a lot of speculation that Oh might return for a brief stint, but is the former Grey’s Anatomy star really returning in Season 16?

Vernoff teases major character returning for Season 16

In a recent interview, Vernoff teased that she is trying hard to get a former Grey’s Anatomy star to return this season. Vernoff did not reveal who she is trying to snag, but she did drop a few hints. Fans, of course, were quick to speculate about which character might return, with Oh being the one person most fans would love to see back in action.

“There’s someone I’m hoping will make an appearance this year, [but] it’s a real maybe. I’m trying,” Vernoff shared.

According to Yahoo, Vernoff later revealed that Season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy will have a family theme to it. Although Vernoff did not reveal too many details, there are a few characters we can rule out right off the bat. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) are probably not returning anytime soon, even in the form of a quick flashback.

It is also probably safe to say that Katherine Heigl’s Izzie Stevens is not returning to Grey’s Anatomy as the actress has already said that her character will not be coming back. But what are the chances that Oh returns to reprise her role after all of these years?

Oh could return to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

A key element of Vernoff’s comment is when she mentioned how she is still trying to get the former cast member back. This suggests that there is some kind of complication surrounding the appearance, which could be related to scheduling. Oh is currently starring in her own show, Killing Eve, which could very well keep her from making an appearance on Grey’s Anatomy.

Oh has also mentioned in the past that her former show is still close to her heart, which definitely bodes well for a potential return.

The one thing going against Oh is the fact that she recently noted that her character will probably not be returning anytime soon. The actress explained how she has discovered a new passion and plans on sticking with it.

This suggests that Oh is not open to reprising her role on Grey’s Anatomy, which could also be why Vernoff is having trouble landing the mystery guest star. Whatever the truth, fans would clearly love to see Oh back in action and teaming up with Ellen Pompeo for one last go.

Who else could return in Season 16?

Aside from Oh, there are a number of Grey’s Anatomy alums that could return this season. Some of the more likely candidates include Jessica Capshaw (Arizona Robbins), Kate Walsh (Addison Montgomery), Sara Ramirez (Callie Torres), and Sarah Drew (April Kepner).

If we take the family theme into account, it would make sense to bring Addison back into the Grey’s Anatomy fold. She is pretty much family to Amelia, who is experiencing a lot of changes at the moment. April also makes sense as she is still living in Seattle and could easily pop in for a quick cameo.

Oh busy filming ‘Killing Eve’

Oh’s character on Killing Eve, Eve Polastrias, was thought to have died at the end of Season 2. The actress, however, was recently spotted filming new scenes in London, which means her character survived her bloody end last season. Fans saw the actress in costume outside of a restaurant in London.

The sighting sent fans into a frenzy and the sighting included her co-star, Fiona Shaw, who plays the part of Carolyn Martens.

Oh has not commented on the rumors surrounding her return to Grey’s Anatomy. The new season of Killing Eve is expected to premiere sometime in the summer of 2020.

Season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy will kick off September 26 on ABC.
