‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Katherine Heigl Weighs in on Alex Karev’s Surprise Ending With Izzie Stevens

Grey’s Anatomy alum Katherine Heigl is opening up about Alex Karev’s (Justin Chambers) surprise ending. Grey’s Anatomy is one of the longest-running shows on TV. As such, the medical drama’s seen actors come and go throughout the years. Characters have been written off the show in all manner of ways but Alex’s send-off still has fans talking.

Justin Chambers left during ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 16

One of the original interns, Alex left during Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Episode 16: “Leave a Light On.” Airing on March 5, 2020, the episode explained his recent absence.

In letters to his current wife Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Alex revealed he’d found his ex-wife, Izzie Stevens (Heigl), raising their two kids he didn’t know existed. They’d reconnected after years without speaking in the weeks leading up to Meredith’s trial.

Instead of going back to Seattle, he stayed in Kansas to make up for the five years he lost. He and Izzie lived on a horse farm raising their son and daughter while everyone at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital dealt with his departure.

Katherine Heigl called Alex Karev’s exit an ‘a**hole move’

While promoting her latest project, Netflix’s Firefly Lane, Heigl commented on how Grey’s Anatomy wrote Alex off the show. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 42-year-old actor shared she hadn’t watched the season 16 episode.

“I didn’t see it,” she said.

After being filled in on the details Heigl wondered about Alex’s current wife. “Wasn’t he with someone?,” she said, referring to Luddington’s character, Jo.

The actor proceeded to make her feelings on Alex leaving Jo for Izzie perfectly clear.

“Listen, isn’t that an a**hole move?” she said.

Heigl left Grey’s Anatomy in 2010 after playing Izzie for six seasons. Her exit came after some drama involving an Emmy nomination she declined. At the time she said she felt her performance and the writing for Izzie didn’t warrant a nod.

Katherine Heigl says a return to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ isn’t ‘likely’

Currently on Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, characters from years past are returning. Patrick Dempsey and T.R. Knight have both reprised their roles as Meredith’s husband, Derek Shepherd, and friend, George O’Malley. But according to Heigl, fans shouldn’t expect her character to be the next familiar face to show up at the hospital.

“I’m super focused on this show and my passion for it,” Heigl said, referring to Firefly Lane. “I would never say never but it’s not likely.”

New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 will begin on March 11, 2021. In the meantime, watch earlier seasons on Netflix, Hulu, and the ABC app.
