Patrick Dempsey’s shocking death on Grey’s Anatomy was over five years ago, but fans remember it like it was yesterday. Dr. Derek Shepherd was on his way to Washington to tell the president he could no longer participate in the brain-mapping project. As he was driving, he witnessed a terrible car accident. He was rushed to the hospital; however, he was unable to speak. The doctor watched nurses and doctors treat him while he silently begged for a head CT scan. Dr. Penelope Blake (Samantha Sloyan) requested the brain scan; however, the attending physician, Dr. Paul Castello (Mike McColl), denied her.

The team took McDreamy into surgery without the scan. By the time the surgeons realized he had a blown people, it was too late. Shepherd was pronounced brain dead, and viewers at home cried hysterically.

Why will Patrick Dempsey never take another role like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy?

“I’m very grateful for Grey’s Anatomy,” Dempsey told People. “It’s given me the opportunity to do everything. But at the same time, there was a cost.”

The 24 episodes per season was a serious time commitment, and Dempsey does not want to be on another TV show with such long seasons.
