‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Will Sarah Drew Return as April Kepner? The Actress Could Come Back for This Reason

Grey’s Anatomy fans have been dying for Sarah Drew to return as April Kepner ever since she left with Jessica Capshaw, who played Arizona Robbins, back in the 14th season finale. The ABC drama left room for Drew’s character to come back, considering Jackson Avery (Jessie Williams) remains part of the regular cast. But, would Drew ever reprise her role as April on Grey’s Anatomy? Recently, the actress opened up about leaving the Shondaland series and the likelihood of her return.

Prior to the Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 premiere, showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed she wanted to bring back a former cast member.

“I’m trying to get someone back,” Vernoff told TVLine in August. “There’s someone I’m hoping will make an appearance this year, [but] it’s a real maybe. I’m trying.”

But, could the mysterious returning cast member be Drew? When speaking with Entertainment Tonight to promote her new Lifetime Christmas movie, Twinkle All the Way, Drew was asked about coming back to Grey’s Anatomy in season 16.

“That’s not up to me,” the 29-year-old stated. However, it looks like Drew would return to Grey’s Anatomy as April if given the chance.

“Look, I will never close the door on my family at Grey’s,” she said. “So it just depends. It’s a hard question to answer because it is not an opportunity that has presented itself.”

That said, Drew will probably have some catching up to do if she is invited back to the ABC series, as the actress admitted she isn’t watching the newest seasons.

“I don’t really watch [Grey’s Anatomy], but I’m still connected to my people over there,” Drew revealed. “And the fans are awesome and going to be hardcore forever. I always get so much love from them, even a year and a half after leaving the show.”

Sarah Drew opens up about leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and April Kepner

On Oct. 23, Drew touched on leaving Grey’s Anatomy in 2018 during an interview with People. And while the actress described the experience as “sad,” she also noted it was “extraordinary.”

“The thing that was amazing in the midst of the heartache of that ending was the response that came out of it,” Drew told People. “It was just like there was so much love, not only from the fans … but also from the crew and from the cast.”

“We got to have all these really beautiful goodbyes that we wouldn’t have gotten to have if we all parted ways at the same time with everyone else,” she continued. “So, there was something extraordinary, really, about that season. As sad as it was, it was pretty extraordinary, too.”

Nevertheless, it seems Drew still had an adjustment period after her exit from Grey’s Anatomy and her character, April. When speaking with ET, the “Indivisible” actress shared her thoughts on the “ups and downs” of the entertainment industry.

“There are epic highs that are incomprehensible,” Drew told the publication. “And then all disappear in a second. Then you have stretches where you don’t know what to do with yourself — who am I without that high? You’re really forced to dive deep identity questions.”

She then explained the highs of acting are the reason she hasn’t left the industry, noting they have her continuously “walking back for more.”

“That’s why we don’t walk away,” Drew said. “It’s like, ‘That felt so good, I want to keep doing this.’ I loved getting into character, I loved those highs, I loved those relationship-set highs — all of those fun all-night shoots.”

But, of course, Drew has learned to seek balance in her career. “The ups and downs are extreme,” she shared. “Trying to find that rhythm and balance is the most challenging thing. But, I would say this season for me has been learning to do that.”

What Sarah Drew is working on after April Kepner on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

It appears Drew has taken the reigns on her acting career post-Grey’s Anatomy. And now, she is working on her first screenplay.

“This whole year, I’ve had a lot more time than I used to have. I used to be on the show, so I was busy all the time,” Drew told ET. “You could take that as, ‘I could be sad and depressed that I’m not busy.’ Or you could go, ‘I’m going to try something new.’ And just finished writing my first screenplay. So that’s what I’ve been doing.”

However, Drew is keeping her new project quiet, as she is still in its early stages. But, it seems like the start of something great moving forward.

“I can’t say yet,” Drew laughed when ET asked about her screenplay. “I’ve teamed up with a couple of producers I’ve worked with before and we’re really excited.”

Regardless, it’s safe to say Drew has settled into the entertainment industry. So, you should expect to see more from her in the near future, whether it’s a leading role in a hit series or more behind-the-scenes leadership.

“I just have more stories to tell,” she said. “My bucket list is: more good stories to tell.”
