Filming For ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 16 Has Begun — See The First Image From Set
Attention Grey’s Anatomy viewers: Season 16 is officially in production. And while you’re going to have to wait several more weeks to see the resolution of that Season 15 finale cliffhanger, this news has us pretty excited. Here’s a first look at the upcoming season.
Grey’s Anatomy has aired for 15 seasons on ABC
The medical drama first began airing in 2005 on ABC. It was the series that kicked off Shondaland, so it’s pop culture impact cannot be understated. The series is titled for the main character, Dr. Meredith Grey, who begins an internship at Seattle Grace Hospital, where her mother, Ellis Grey, is known as a legendary surgeon.
A lot has changed since that first episode. Many characters, including Meredith’s primary love interest, Dr. Derek Shepherd, have been written or killed off. Meredith is now Chief of General Surgery, and the hospital is named Grey Sloan Memorial (for two other deceased surgeons). Oh, and Meredith has a new love interest — but we’ll get to him in a minute.
The series broke an incredible record in 2019
Season 15 wasn’t just notable for establishing this new relationship. It was also important for another very big reason: On Feb. 28, 2019, series officially surpassed E.R. to become the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history.
This occasion was marked with, appropriately, the 15th episode of the season (and 332nd overall). In it, the characters all attend a party, and, among many other pivotal moments, Meredith and her beau, who have been keeping their romance under wraps, are discovered by more than one person of note.
Season 15 finished airing in May
Just a few weeks after that episode, the season finale, Jump into the Fog aired. In this hour, yet another natural disaster, this time in the form of a thick fog, has overcome Seattle, and the doctors have to deal with its repercussions.
Though we’re still waiting to determine the fate of at least one of our main characters, we know that Meredith, along with her colleagues, Drs. Webber and Karev, have been let go after committing insurance fraud. The finale, which was directed by star Debbie Allen (Dr. Catherine Fox), aired on May 16, 2019.
Here’s the first set image from Season 16
It’s been a slow couple of months without any Grey’s in our lives. Fortunately, it looks like the team is back to work. On July 30, 2019, a behind-the-scenes image from Season 16 was shared on social media, making it official: Production has begun.
The photo in question was shared on Instagram by Giacomo Gianniotti, who portrays Meredith’s love interest, Dr. Andrew DeLuca. Pompeo (Meredith) is also in the frame. Additionally, Pompeo shared a Boomerang in her Instagram story of Gianniotti lying in bed next to a bowl of ice cream. And she’s definitely not complaining that this is what she has to do her first day back.
When does Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 begin airing?
While we can only hope we’ll get at least a few more images and videos from behind the curtain, the real question is: When does Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 begin airing on ABC?
Fortunately, audiences don’t have to wait too long. Meredith and the rest of the Grey Sloan team will return to your TV on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019, at their usual time. Just don’t hold your breath that they’ll all make it back alive.
