‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17: Ellen Pompeo Teases Her ‘New Favorite Couple’ and It’ll Make You Excited About the Cast Changes

Changes are coming to the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 cast, and Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) just spelled out why the new additions are exactly what fans need right now.

In early September 2020, the Shondaland series held its first virtual table read ahead of the forthcoming season. Then when a viewer asked Pompeo for spoilers, the actor revealed her new favorite Grey’s Anatomy couple is Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill). And quite frankly, we’re not surprised after witnessing the duo’s spark last season.

Ever since Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 ended early, fans have been waiting for details about season 17. Now, we know the new season will start production during the week of Sept. 8. Meanwhile, the cast had their first table read on Sept. 3. Then Pompeo dropped a few hints when answering fan questions on Twitter. And while Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 will cover the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there will still be plenty of time for romance and comedy.

“I have a new favorite couple,” Pompeo wrote on Twitter. “Not sure what you’ll call them …but they are adorable you guys can have fun guessing who!!”

Then one fan correctly guessed Maggie and Winston, and Pompeo continued to gush over the couple. “Ding ding ding ! You guys… you have no idea how adorable they are,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, Giacomo Gianniotti — who plays Meredith’s love interest, Andrew DeLuca — commented on Pompeo’s post. “Wait, you mean ‘second’ favorite couple right?” he wrote. And Pompeo’s response gave MerLuca shippers some hope.

“Well I did say ‘new,'” Pompeo wrote. “But okay you have a point.”

If anyone needs a refresher, Winston was introduced in Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 Episode 19, titled “Love of My Life.” The new character was one of Maggie’s residents while she was Chief Resident at Tufts Medical Center. The two reunited at a conference in LA.

During their short-lived reunion, Winston admitted he had feelings for Maggie, and they hooked up at the conference hotel. They also connected on an emotional level, as both surgeons lost their moms to cancer. Then at the end of the episode, Winston knew he had to “seize the day” and even offered to move to Seattle.

“Sometimes you just meet somebody and you know,” Winston said. But even so, Maggie hesitated, noting she wasn’t the type to make rash decisions. Winston understood and told her to take the time she needed.

Now, Hill will return as Winston in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17. In July, the actor was also upped to a series regular along with Richard Flood, who plays Cormac “McWidow” Hayes. So it certainly seems like Maggie and Winston could be in it for the long haul. But only time will tell.

When will ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 return to ABC?

For now, Pompeo’s excitement about Maggie and Winston will have to tie us over while we patiently wait for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere. As mentioned, production should kick off in mid-September 2020. But the release date has yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter recently revealed the unscripted show, Press Your Luck, will take the usual Grey’s Anatomy Thursday night time slot in September. But ABC Entertainment President, Karey Burke, also hinted the network will unveil more details about scripted shows later. So stay tuned.

“We’re fortunate to have such a strong unscripted slate to launch our first wave of programming this fall,” Burke said. “With our scripted series ramping up production, we look forward to announcing more premiere dates very soon.”
