Will ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 Be the Show’s Last?
Acclaimed medical drama Grey’s Anatomy just wrapped up its record-breaking 15th season. Now, we’re headed into a summer hiatus, but fortunately, we know there will be more Grey’s in the fall. But just how many more seasons have been ordered by ABC? Here’s what you need to know about the future of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and all of its surgeons.
Here’s how far the show has come
When Grey’s Anatomy premiered back in 2005, the world was a very different place. Many saw the series as ABC’s answer to ER, which at that point, had been airing on ABC for more than 10 years, and was a major success. But this time around, there was a lot more diversity, and the main character was a woman.
Fast-forward 10 years, and we can’t image our lives without Grey’s. The series has surpassed ER as the longest-running medical drama of all time, and though there have been many cast changes, a core group has stuck around through it all. The show has also seen a lot of changes in the political and cultural climate, much of which has been addressed on screen.
The season finale left us with a cliffhanger
If you haven’t yet watched the Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 finale “Jump Into the Fog,” then beware: there are spoilers ahead. The episode picked up right where the previous one left off — Seattle is covered in fog, and there’s a multi-car pile-up on the freeway. Owen, Schmidt, and the blood donor for Gus are stuck in this, Maggie and Jackson are trapped in the woods as the fog rolls in, and Amelia and Teddy are on their way to the hospital, as the latter is in labor.
Shockingly, nearly everyone makes it out OK (Grey’s has been kind about granting us relatively death-free finales for the past few years). Gus got his blood and is recovering, Teddy and Owen have a new baby girl (and a new relationship to work on), and even Jo gets the help she needs, checking into a psychiatric facility.
But there are two major issues that need resolving in Season 16. The first involves Meredith, Webber, and Alex, all of whom were fired by Bailey when they admitted to committing insurance fraud. DeLuca will, we assume, be set free soon, but what will happen to our favorite original characters? Oh, and that leads us to the other question: Where is Jackson? The final moment sees Maggie on the side of the road, calling out for her beau.
How many seasons of Grey’s Anatomy are left?
It was announced in May 2019 that Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for not one but two more seasons on ABC. This means that not only will we get a resolution for this cliffhanger, but there’s a lot more to come from the gang.
But how much longer can the show actually go on? Over the years, the subject has come up many times. Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) has said that she wants to keep playing the character, and the creative heads behind-the-scenes will continuing to work as long as she’s there. So fear not, Grey’s fans — you’ve got at least two years, if not more until you have to say goodbye for real. For now, it’s just a “see you later.”
