Grey’s Anatomy might have killed off Andrew DeLuca, but Giacomo Gianniotti is coming back for one more round. Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 7 shocked everyone when DeLuca died after being stabbed. Meanwhile, Gianniotti said goodbye to DeLuca in real life. Now, it’s been a few weeks since DeLuca passed. But the character was spotted in Teddy Altman’s (Kim Raver) dream sequence. Gianniotti will also be directing Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 11. So the actor had the opportunity to update fans shortly after his departure.

“I’ve definitely had more time than the fans to think about it, as I knew much before the fans. So the dust has settled for quite some time for me,” Gianniotti told Entertainment Tonight Canada. “But since the episode, I’m feeling great.”

Gianniotti also shared how he felt about the fan reactions to his Grey’s Anatomy exit. He said:

It’s been amazing these past couple of weeks to just feel the outpouring of love from all the fans saying, “We’re so sad, we’re so gutted, we’re so blindsided. But we love you and thank you for your character that meant so much to us and to the show.” For people struggling with bipolar, there was a big beacon of light with DeLuca and a lot of representation there that we were all very proud to tell that story. So a lot of people who are suffering from different mental illnesses — and specifically bipolar — were sending me a lot of messages, which meant the world to me. I didn’t have time to respond to every single person. So if you’re listening, I read them and I saw them. Thank you so much, it means the world to know that you were impacted by DeLuca.

DeLuca might be gone, but Gianniotti returned to the Grey’s Anatomy set shortly after he left the cast. As mentioned, the actor will direct season 17 episode 11. Then when speaking with Entertainment Tonight Canada, Gianniotti briefly teased the new April 8 episode.

“Honesty, I was so happy when I got it,” Gianniotti said, noting that his directorial debut is a classic Grey’s Anatomy episode. “We’ve had a lot of this stuff on the beach. We’ve had flashbacks and a lot of different storytelling devices that we’ve been using this season and the last. My episode is just a true Grey’s Anatomy episode.”

He continued, “We got our medical scenes, we got love and romance between our main characters, drama between our main characters. There’s a healthy balance of inside the hospital and outside the hospital. And all the feels. We’ve got some great surgeries, so it’s a really really great episode. I’m really proud of it.”

Gianniotti also hinted that Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 Episode 11 will include “some great guest star actors.” Of course, he didn’t give anything else away. But we can certainly think of a few more returning characters we’d like to see.

New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 air Thursday nights on ABC.
