The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 Promo Teases Teddy and Owen’s Fate

The Grey’s Anatomy premiere is on its way, which means we’re finally going to find out what happened to Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). The couple left fans on a major cliffhanger last season, and no one knows where the relationship is headed next. But recently, ABC dropped the first Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 promo, which highlighted a scene between Teddy and Owen. And basically, everyone needs to prepare for some major heartbreak.

Teddy and Owen’s journey was tough to watch in Grey’s Anatomy Season 16. The couple got engaged after giving birth to their daughter, Allison. But eventually, Teddy started an affair with her ex-boyfriend, Tom Koracick (Greg Germann).

The cheating went on through the Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 finale. In the episode — titled “Put on a Happy Face” — Teddy and Tom slept together before the cardio surgeon’s wedding. Then Owen found out about the romantic entanglement after Teddy left a voicemail of the hookup.

At the end of the finale, Teddy got ready to marry Owen, white dress and all. But Owen didn’t show up. Instead, he told his mother he was pulled into surgery without mentioning a word to his fiancée.

On Sept. 17, ABC released the first Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 promo. The new cast and crew just started filming. So naturally, the trailer was filled with major moments from last season, including the birth of Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Atticus “Link” Lincoln’s (Chris Carmack) baby as well as Andrew DeLuca’s (Giacomo Gianniotti) mental health issues. Then the preview jumped to clips of Teddy and Tom’s affair, which was followed by a heartbreaking scene between Teddy and Owen.

“I love you,” Teddy pleads to her best friend. But Owen simply stares back. He’s clearly hurt.

As you may know, Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 will kick off with a time jump. So the new season won’t start where we left off in the season 16 finale. Nonetheless, showrunner Krista Vernoff promised viewers will get to see the immediate aftermath of some storylines. And hopefully, given the trailer, that includes Teddy and Owen.

“We are not working to protect stories we had [planned] for the end of Season 16,” Vernoff told TVLine in September. “You will get to see some of the immediate moments from where we left off.”

She added, “There was great material that we had already shot but did not get a chance to air. We found a way to build it into our premiere.”

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 17 will start airing in November 2020

When ABC unveiled the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 promo trailer, the network also announced the premiere date. So mark your calendars, everyone. The Shondaland medical drama returns with new episodes starting Thursday, Nov. 12, at 9 p.m. ET.

That said, Grey’s Anatomy fans might want to tune in a little early when the 17th season makes its debut. The two-hour premiere will be part of a crossover special with the firefighter spinoff, Station 19, which begins at 8 p.m. ET.
