‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Showrunner Hinted at More Patrick Dempsey Scenes With ‘Deeper, Richer Conversations’ This Season

After George O’ Malley (T. R. Knight) returned to Grey’s Anatomy on Dec. 3, fans are begging for more Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) scenes. Showrunner and executive producer Krista Vernoff teased more “deeper, richer conversations” between Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and McDreamy later this season.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans loved the conversation between Meredith and George

When George O’ Malley shocked fans by his return to Grey’s Anatomy on Dec. 3, they were delighted by the long in-depth conversation that Meredith had with him. The two talked about what it’s like to leave their loved ones when they die and that George would rather have stayed. They even talked about “007’s” funeral.

“You were all cracking up at my funeral,” George told Meredith. “That made me happy.”

Then they moved on to more in-depth conversations. Would Merdith’s three children be OK with her death?

“I was devastated when you died, and then I was OK,” Mer told George. “Even with Derek, eventually, you go on. And the kids would go on.”

However, George thinks it would be harder for her children. He tells Mer how his mother “didn’t go on.”

“Some grief is heavier than other grief,” he added. “Sometimes it moves through you, and sometimes it just gets stuck.”

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans wanted more discussions between Meredith and Derek

Fans were disappointed that Meredith and George had more in-depth conversations than Meredith and Derek.

“I feel so spoiled that we’re getting these amazing conversations between Mer and George,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “But it makes the Mer/Der exchange seem SO silly in comparison.”

Other viewers agreed that they hope to see more talking between Meredith and Derek.

“I wondered about this, too,” another viewer wrote. “Why are we getting these great conversations with George but not with Derek? I would like her to have some with Derek also. Derek is just so smiley, whereas George feels more real.”

Derek and Meredith will have “deeper, richer conversations” later this season

In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Vernoff admitted that Derek would appear again and have a more extended discussion with Meredith.

“Eventually, they’ll get to have deeper, richer conversations as Meredith and George did,” Vernoff told the outlet. “We worked with Patrick for two days. We had two days to capture four episodes, and so that’s why you’re not getting the full meal in one episode.”

Knight joked that George was the soup before the meatier conversation with Derek occurs.

“You want more, tune in,” she teased. “It’s like you had a little taste before dinner and come back for dessert.”

Grey’s Anatomy returns on Dec. 10, 2020 to ABC.
