‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Camilla Luddington Says She Would Love to Portray This Iconic Actress: ‘She Was Such a Big Presence’

Grey’s Anatomy star Camilla Luddington first debuted on the show as Jo Wilson in 2012. A cast member since season nine, the British-born actress already had some credits to her name including the part of Kate Middleton in the 2011 Lifetime movie William & Kate.

While portraying the royal was a career high, Luddington has her eye on another potential role she would love to take on.

‘William & Kate’ gets bad press but good ratings

When the TV biopic on the famed royal couple aired in 2011, it was subjected to some harsh reviews. However, the negative publicity may have stirred the curiosity of viewers and prompted them to watch.

“What’s been great is that we’ve had so many people approach us and say, ‘We tuned in because we thought it would be the worst movie ever made, apparently, and we loved it!’” Luddington told Access Hollywood in 2011. “So I almost feel like the bad press sort of helped the people want to watch it and really tune in.”

The highest praise may have come from the couple on which the Lifetime movie was based. “We heard that Will and Kate did see the film — from an insider — and they loved it,” the actress noted.

The benefits of working on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

In an interview with the New York Film Academy in 2014, Luddington shared the perks of working on the prime time medical drama.

“Every member of the cast has such a good work ethic,” the actress raved. “It’s been great to watch their process for breaking down material and bringing life to it week after week. They are also so encouraging to new cast members which I think can be rare. They invite you to ‘play’ in scenes and push you beyond your comfort zone.”

When describing show creator Shonda Rhimes, the Grey’s star had nothing but praise for the media mogul and considers her a trailblazer for women.

“Shonda has a way of keeping her audience on edge time and time again,” Luddington remarked. “She doesn’t give in to what the audience wants… And always… always it serves for a more captivating story line. That’s what I like about her. She’s just paving the way for females in the industry. She’s showing what a power house women can be.”

Camilla Luddington’s wish list

Growing up in the UK, Luddington revealed that one film in particular inspired her love for acting when she was a little girl.

“The movie The Wizard of Oz was what initially drew me to acting,” she shared. “At five years old I was able to understand that Judy Garland was an actress playing a character and that I wanted to do the very same thing. Perhaps it was an even greater extension of ‘make believe’ that I wanted to pursue.”

After scoring a myriad of roles including her part as the royal icon, the British actress still has her wish list of future characters she’d relish playing.

“I would love to do a period piece,” Luddington told the New York Film Academy. “Or a fantasy piece like Game of Thrones. The closest I’ve come to it is playing a fairy on True Blood. But I’m crossing my fingers for more opportunities.”

Her ideal role? “I would love to play Elizabeth Taylor. She was such a big presence on and off screen,” the Grey’s actress said of the legendary star. “Perhaps one of the last iconic old Hollywood movie stars – and of course a fellow Brit who also moved to the US early in her life.”

In the meantime, fans are eagerly awaiting Luddington’s return to the small screen when Grey’s Anatomy premieres in the fall.
