‘Grey’s Anatomy’: The Reason Sandra Oh Will Never Appear on the Show Again
Fans of Grey’s Anatomy have been dying for Cristina Yang to make a reappearance. Her friendship with Meredith Grey was one of the best in television history. They went through more deaths and tragedies together than anyone should. Their relationship was the invention of the saying “you’re my person.”
But sadly, we may never see the two characters on television together again. Why? Because Sandra Oh simply doesn’t want to come back.
Why Oh doesn’t want to return to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
Since her days on the award-winning ABC show, Oh has acted in a few other things. None quite as big as her recent role as Eve Polastri in BBC’s series, Killing Eve.
After taking on this role, Oh just doesn’t feel like she can get back into the headspace of Yang.
“I just got to tell you, creatively you have moved on and while I know, and I deeply appreciate it, because I can feel it from the fans how much they love Cristina and that the show also still keeps Cristina alive, for me, [Killing Eve] is my home now,” she told Extra when asked if she would return to Grey’s at the Killing Eve season 2 Hollywood premiere. “This is where I am.”
She continued, stressing that she is now a new character.
“I am Eve and that’s where I plan to stay as long as the show will have me,” she said. “And that’s really where I want to be.”
Will Oh return for the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ series finale?
The best part about series finales is that all of the former cast members usually return for one last time. Though Grey’s Anatomy has not announced when the series is ending, fans can’t help but hope that when the iconic series does come to a close, Yang will make an appearance.
Unfortunately, Oh isn’t too optimistic about the probability of that happening.
“I just don’t know,” she said on Access Hollywood when asked about returning for the grand finale. “It would have to feel right.”
What awards has Oh won?
Since she broke onto the scene, Oh has been recognized for her ability to transform into her characters. She played the role of Yang for a whopping nine years, from 2005 to 2014.
During that time, she won five awards for her portrayal of the surgeon, including two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe, and a Satellite Award.
Since becoming Polastri, Oh has continued to rack up accolades. She won three awards for the show’s first season alone, including a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics Choice Television Award.
Does Ellen Pompeo want Oh to return?
Obviously, fans of Grey’s want Oh to return to the show, but how does Ellen Pompeo, who plays her on-screen bestie, Grey, feel about Oh sticking to Killing Eve?
Apparently, not so bad.
“Selfishly I would love to see Sandra Oh come back to Grey’s,” Pompeo told TV Line in January. “But I also love Killing Eve so much, and I love seeing her have so many of these incredible moments. So, as much as I love Sandra, I’d rather see her shine out on her own. I enjoy that more. That‘s more gratifying to me.”
