‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’: 9 Spoilers From the First Trailer
Marvel recently released a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and it’s just as hilarious and action-packed as you’d expected. Though the clip doesn’t get into plot specifics, it does reveal a few important insights about the upcoming sequel — including a closer look at the new character of Mantis. Here are nine things we learned about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from the first trailer.
[Update 3/2/17: A second full-length trailer has been released. Scroll to the end of this article to see the latest trailer and our analysis.]
1. Baby Groot steals the show
There’s no question that the adorable Baby Groot hogs the spotlight in this full-length trailer. The reincarnated tree life form is as mischievous as ever and will seemingly require lots of supervision in the upcoming sequel — a job that falls to one very exasperated Rocket. Case in point? In one hilarious exchange, Rocket attempts to remind Groot to avoid pressing a red detonative button on a homemade nuke. Unfortunately for Rocket, Groot just doesn’t seem to get it and later ends up dashing off with the device in hand. Yikes.
But while he may not be as obedient as he once was, Baby Groot can still hold his own. The infant-sized character is later seen taking down a Ravager with a lasso.
2. The Guardians fight a tentacled monster
The trailer also gives us our first good look at the Abelisk, a multi-dimensional monster that we first saw illustrated in concept art published earlier in 2016. The tentacled beast will make for a formidable foe to the Guardians, as the clip shows several of the heroes attacking it at once. While Gamora goes at it with her blades, Drax takes a more direct approach and literally leaps down its throat. He’s later seen stabbing his way out of a slimy and fleshy looking place that we can only assume is the inside of the monster.
3. Star-Lord faces a fleet of spaceships
From the looks of it, moviegoers can expect some pretty epic space battles in the upcoming sequel. The trailer shows Peter Quill zooming through space to avoid alien drones and later facing down a fleet of smaller spacecrafts, as seen above.
4. The Guardians’ relationship with the Ravagers is, well, complicated
It’s been confirmed that Peter Quill’s former mentor Yondu will join the Guardians after his fellow Ravagers revolt against him. Though the Ravagers reportedly plan to capture their former leader and the Guardians gang to turn them over to the Kree, things don’t go exactly as they hoped. At one point, Rocket sets off a blast that launches a mob of the space pirates into the sky. As previously mentioned, we also see a Baby Groot take down a Ravager — while wearing what looks like Ravager garb.
5. Drax may get (temporarily) left behind
It looks like Drax the Destroyer will find himself in all kinds of wacky situations in the upcoming sequel. In addition to getting caught in the belly of the aforementioned beast, he also seems to be abandoned or forcibly separated from the rest of the crew at some point. “Screw you spaceship,” he is seen proclaiming in the trailer, while shaking his fists at the sky.
6. Mantis will make a great addition
The trailer ends with a closer look at Mantis, the new character played by Pom Klementieff. We know that Mantis has ties to Peter Quill’s birth father, Ego, having been raised by the part-planet, part-human being. She also has connections to the Kree, the extraterrestrial humanoid race that the Ravagers want to turn Yondu and the Guardians over to. In the comics, the Kree believe Mantis is the Celestial Madonna who will mate with the eldest Cotati (telepathic plants) to become the mother of the Celestial Messiah, “the most important being in the universe.”
In the trailer, Mantis is seen reading Quill’s emotions. She ends up unknowingly confirming his crush on Gamora — much to the loud amusement of Drax. Oh Guardians, how we missed you.
7. The Guardians are just as funny as you remembered
As we previously said, this first trailer is more about establishing tone and style than it is about delving into plot specifics. And judging from the clip, audiences can expect plenty of laughs in the sequel. The characters haven’t lost their penchant for dry humor and hilarious banter, as evidenced by Rocket and Quill’s exchange about their need for tape at 1:15.
8. The visuals are even more stunning
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the first Marvel film to be shot on a Red Weapon 8k camera, which makes for higher resolution and livelier colors. The difference is evident in the trailer, which is chock full of vibrant backgrounds and vivacious imagery.
9. Expect another great soundtrack
Since this is Guardians, music plays a big role. As in the original, the sequel’s soundtrack will be an integral part of establishing the film’s playful tone. The trailer is set to The Sweet’s 1974 tune, “Fox on the Run.” Other songs that will reportedly be included on Awesome Mixtape Vol. 2 are “The Chain” from Fleetwood Mac and “Come A Little Bit Closer” by Jay and the Americans.
