Guardians of the Galaxy is still in theaters, but director James Gunn is already teasing details about the sequel. During a recent interview with Empire, Gunn revealed more about what viewers can expect to see in the next installment of the new Marvel superhero franchise.

The studio announced a follow-up film, scheduled for 2017, before the initial movie even hit theaters. The preemptive move turned out to be a smart one, as Guardians of the Galaxy received rave reviews from both critics and audience members alike. It went on to break August box office records during its debut week and has since gone on to earn a worldwide total of $319.1 million. After the wide success of the first film, it’s no surprise that Marvel was quick to bring Gunn back on to helm the second flick as well. Now, the director is disclosing a little more information about what he has in store for the already highly anticipated sequel.

As those who have seen the movie already know, Guardians of the Galaxy left the audience with several lingering questions still up in the air; most pressingly, who exactly is Peter Quill aka Star-Lord’s (played by Chris Pratt) father? Gunn confirmed to Empire that he had already worked out the storyline for Quill’s parents, including the identity of his father, before production on the first Guardians even began. He also revealed that moviegoers can expect Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to further explore the mystery of the superhero’s parentage.

“There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay,” Gunn explained. “We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense, and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”

The director also provided an answer to those who have been wondering how true the movie will stay to the original storyline. Gunn confirmed that the sequel will deviate from the comic books when it comes to who Quill’s father is. “It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much,” he revealed.

In the comics, Quill’s dad is J’son of Spartax, the Emperor of the Spartoi Empire. Now that Gunn has confirmed that won’t also be the case in the sequel, viewers are left speculating over which character will take his place. So far, all we know about the father in the film is that he spent some time on Earth in the ‘80s, during which he met Quill’s mom. On her deathbed, his mother describes him as an “angel made of pure light.” Later, we find out he’s actually a member of an ancient alien race. Fans are now suggesting the characters Warlock or Starfox as potential fathers for Quill.

But Quill’s dad isn’t the only character viewers have been wondering about. Fans have been questioning when Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) will pop up again. The character made a brief cameo in The Avengers and also appeared in the first Guardians of Galaxy, but some were speculating that he’ll have a bigger role in the sequel. Gunn has finally provided an answer, confirming that Thanos will show up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but as a side character.

“He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure,” he explained. “There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos.”

The newly revealed details about the flick may be minor, but they’re already causing plenty of buzz. It’s clear that while the first movie may still be making waves, fans are already eager to hear more news about the sequel. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be released on July 28, 2017.
