‘Guardians of the Galaxy’: James Gunn on What to Expect From Awesome Mix Vol. 3
Director James Gunn says that the music of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be a bit different than that of the first two films.
In a recent Facebook Q&A to promote the blu-ray release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn confirmed that the songs featured in Vol. 3 will be songs that Yondu chose in order to communicate with Peter Quill.
“Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. have been Meredith’s song choices, her communication to Peter,” Gunn said. “…in Vol. 3, the song choices will be Yondu communicating.”
The first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies saw Peter Quill listening to music that was selected by his deceased mother. They were all songs that she liked growing up, and they were often used as a way for Meredith to communicate with her son from beyond the grave. But in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Peter Quill’s cassette player is destroyed, as is his only copy of Awesome Mix Vol. 2. At the end of the film, Yondu gifts Peter a Zune, and so now all of the songs featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be Yondu’s way of communicating with Peter. We already saw that at the end of the movie with the song “Father and Son,” which Yondu clearly selected specifically for Peter, who was like a son to him.
Gunn is currently hard at work on the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Because music is such a major part of this film franchise, he picks the songs early on in the process, and Gunn recently said on Facebook that most of the songs for Vol. 3 have already been selected. However, that wasn’t a simple process, as he previously said in early July that he was considering 181 songs to be on Awesome Mix Vol. 3.
I have it down to 181 songs. That list could get longer. https://t.co/byRjdfSa07

There has been some speculation that Awesome Mix Vol. 3 could feature some more modern songs, but this is not something James Gunn has confirmed. He has, however, said that the soundtrack will be “a little different” than the others.
Gunn has been open about the fact that he felt intimidated selecting the music for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. After all, he never expected the first movie’s soundtrack to become such a massive hit.
“If I was ever intimidated by anything, it was coming up with the songs for Awesome Mix Volume 2,” he told Entertainment Weekly in April. “I set out to make a big, huge, hit movie on the first one. I didn’t set out to make a [hit] soundtrack on the first one. That just happened…So, that’s what I had to do on the second movie, too, was just really focus on how could I best tell the story with the songs and kind of let go of the soundtrack aspect of it.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s soundtrack did not sell quite as well as the first one, but it still peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 chart. For comparison, the first movie’s soundtrack reached number one.
The third film in the Guardians of the Galaxy series does not currently have a release date, but it will likely hit theaters in 2020. As part of this week’s Facebook Q&A, James Gunn also said that Vol. 3 will set up the next decade or more of Marvel movies.
“One of the things I’m doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it will take place after the next two Avengers movies and it will help to set up the next 10, 20 years of Marvel movies,” he said. “It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy.“
